    Default Favorite kick drum mic

I went out this week and decided to finally pony up the cash for one heck of a drum mic.
    The Audix D-6

    it has punch
    it has fullness
it is tough as all get out
i couldnt be ahppier with this mic.
i cant wait to get a 31 band eq on it with some compression
this is staying in my arsenal forever
    any questions???

what other brands of kick mic's have you used? how does it compare to those?

i own a shure beta kick mic and used it for the first time this past weekend. i haven't heard any of the recordings we made with it yet. its the first kick mic i've owned so even after i hear it i really have nothing to compare it to.

The D6 is excellent, I have used one that I borrowed from a friend. I recently purchased my own and bought a Shure Beta 52. Both mics are outstanding. I think on my bass drum, the Beta doesn't need any EQ where as the D6 had to be dialed in a bit, not a lot, but a little bit. either way they do a great job for their intended use.

i have the akg d112. its more punchy than my old beta52, but less low end. it needs to be boosted a little.

we have a Shure Beta 52, AKG D112s, & Blue Kickballs for dedicated kick mics in our studio. The Blue blew away the D112 (for about a third of the price), but my favorite is the B52. We also had a Yamaha Subkick for a while, but we didn't really care for it.

I keep hearing good things about the Audix, but haven't had the chance to try one yet.
    Thanks for posting your impressions

    i have used betas
    d6s
    d112s
    etc

    as for my personal tastes
the eq argument isnt really my style
    i eq everything
its just one more thing that you can do to take good and make it great
in comparison between the d112 and the d6
i love the d6 low capturing ability where as the d112 is kind of flimsy around say 50 hz
(which also happens to be my favorite frequency to boost on a kick)
the d6 also hase this attack that just makes the kick pop like none other
what i would really like to check out is the dual element mic by audio technica
but at around three times the price
i dont think that will happen soon

also i want to try out the d6 in conjunction with the subkick
its a sub impulse mic and a low end capturing device put together to create what could be some amazing results
    xush
what are the characteristics of the blue
    i have been curious?
i do recommend the audix to any and everybody though
it will make you want to stash your d112 for good haha

as for comparison with the 52
it has more attack (but less harsh)
better high volume handling (at least to my ear there is less distortion)
and the bottom end just booms
ill let you know how it goes once i get an eq on it
i put it through some 18s today
and boy did it push some air

    hehehehe

cool. I definitely want to add one to the arsenal eventually. I think our D112s should have been stashed a long time ago, everytime I try a new mic against it. :-0

The Subkick really underwhelmed us. I was surprised at the results; I've heard great things about it, and the video where they demonstrate it on the Yammy site makes it look impressive, but in our tests it just didn't live up to the hype- didn't fit our music at all.

The Blue was a surprise in a good way. It is fatter on the low end than the D112, and just has better presence and punch to me. And that was in the flat EQ position. The low-boost is crazy. It's very versatile and natural sounding. I like this one a lot.

    thanks for the heads up

what kind of music do you play just for reference?

cool, hope you like it if you try one. It's so cheap online, it's hard to miss...

we do a sort of cinematic/art-rock kind of approach with some progressive flavors. Our guitarist and bassist/stickist are studio engineers and are pretty knowledgeable gear-wise. They've been thru a LOT of mics in their day- it's always nice to get their input on stuff I'm shopping for.
there's links to our stuff in my sig
