you can do what you want. who says you cant? i have a 14" crash i use as a top hat cymbal when i play jazz.

Definitely wouldn't recommend hi hats as a spair crash. They do work as a cool bell-ish effect if you like that though. For a while, I had the bottom hat of my old PST-3's set up upsidedown to use as a chime. Now I have a real chime, so I don't use it lol
