    Default Gargerelli Koopa's Current Project

Once upon a time there was a group of people who believed that the joy of laughter should be shared by all.

They got together to write and perform comedy songs and routines.

Ladies & gentlemen it is with great pleasure
(and a small bit of trepidation) that we introduce to you:

GARGERELLI - A Musical Comedy Revue

    The Genesis of Gargerelli

Vin Gargiulo and Gene Focarelli knew each other for a very long time. They started kindergarten the same year and journeyed throughout school from grade to grade together. When Vin turned eight years old, Gene ate the candles off his birthday cake. But the last three years of high school had strengthened their friendship even more than Gene’s fondness for candle wax.

They had several things in common. They both played musical instruments; Vin played the drums and keyboards, and Gene played the guitar. They both switched their course of study the same year so they wound up in many of the same classes. They both had a love for entertaining others by making them laugh.

For several years Vin had studied magic and was known as The Great Martino. He taught Gene to perform many of these magic tricks and they teamed up as Winky and Dinky, two of the most unusual clowns to ever perform for children’s parties. They also did impersonations and performed them for adult audiences when they were not in the characters of Winky and Dinky.

By 1970, they had developed a respectable comedy routine from over days of cutting class. They were “legendary” for their humor throughout the senior class of Cliffside Park High. Underclassman Bob Perrone described the duo as “a perfect example of how society does tend to let a few of the loonies out and about and unsupervised.”

After they graduated high school, they put together a group of friends and produced “Minnie’s Boy,” a musical comedy about the life story of the Marx Brothers. It was a charity event that raised money for Multiple Sclerosis. During this time, they were both developing their musical skills. When they needed a diversion, they would grab their musical instruments and jam. Occasional they would perform a familiar song, but most of the time they went into some wacky cosmic jams or they wrote their own tunes. They would then add some comical lyrics and this was the beginning of the musical group known as Gargerelli.
    Gargerelli: A Musical Comedy Revue

As they added more and more of these musical parodies to their repertoire, they felt the need to take it to the next level. They decided to put together a real band. They both knew some talented people who could play instruments so they started to gather them up.

Pete Nadjzian was a friend and bass player that both Gene and Vin knew from school. He was in attendance at Gene’s house on many occasions when they would be jamming. Sometimes he joined them with his bass guitar. Other times he would simply pick up a washboard, put thimbles on each finger, and add a nice hillbilly sound to their tunes. They asked him if he would like to be their bass player / washboardist, and he agreed.

Since Gene mainly played rhythm guitar, they needed someone to play lead guitar. Pete suggested Bob Perrone, another classmate from Cliffside Park. Pete and Bob had previously performed together in several different groups; some rock, some country rock, and some they would rather not remember. But Pete felt that Bob would be a perfect addition for the group.

Bob showed up to meet the “band” with his Dobro to get a feel for what they were doing. When he heard the music blended with the comedy, he was surprised at the sounds that were being developed. “I had never before considered the combination of humor and song being presented in the format that Vinnie and Gene were proposing,” Bob would later recall.

Dennis Maciupa is a coworker of Pete's called upon to hit the skins. A drummer of 15 years, Dennis studied jazz with legendary drummer Sonny Igoe (who played for the Benny Goodman Orchestra, CBS Orchestra, and countless other major jazz acts). An exciting time keeper, Dennis adds flair while never losing a major back beat!

I like my smaller toms to have more focus and for my bigger tom(s) to sound more open. I can get resonant crisp strokes off of the 10, 12, and 14 and go to the 16 when I want some thunder!

    Thank you PB!

This is a funny song we do called Hypochondriac. This track wasn't taped professionally so bare with the reduced quality. We do a really cool change into Hendrix towards the end!

Crappy house kit with a few of my cymbals and my noble n cooley 150th anniversary 13" alloy snare. No mic's besides a bass drum mic and a snare mic. No professional camera crew either but I think you can tell that compared to previous versions of the song we are getting tighter.
