    Default drum brakes/tom waits

hey so im a big tom waits fan and i read that he uses something called "drum brakes" on a song on his swordfishtrombones album (16 shells from a 30 ought six)...

anybody know anything about these? or where i can find out more about them? wikipedia didnt give up a lot of info on it--he always have amazing sounds on his albums, and ive always been curious as to what he's using in his percussion section--

    thanks!

in either high school or college concert bands, i've seen actual brake drums being used as percussion. that is, the drum part of a drum brake system on a car. from the sound of the metallic clank in that song i'd say that's all it is. you can probably find one at a junk shop if you're handy with a wrench.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drum_brake (there's a paragraph at the bottom about percussion use)

this is what one looks like...
