I bet they thunder!! 30deg or 45 deg edges?? Love my mahogany drums!!
    The standard 30 deg. edges.

Yes - they do thunder! I was just playing them a few minutes ago. I'm using the Vic Firth Birch Tala Wands (Steve Smith) - they have a very nice feel and bring a full mellow sound out of the toms especially - I'm liking it lots. I've only had them a week and I'm hooked.

Hello! I've been away too long. Dropped fb 3 wks ago... don't miss it
    Good to be back here.
This 74 Gretsch 4108 aluminum shelled snare is a good one. I use it with my 68 Sunset Satin Flame 20 12 16 set. My wife found it in a pawn shop. Called me to say there's a Gretsch snare here with a square badge... $75cdn.
I was thinking Catalina but still a good buy. Boy was I surprised to see the SSB. The S/N puts it at 1974.20210309_165054.jpg20210309_164820.jpg20210309_164850.jpg

Hello Kona...………….nice find on the SSB snare...………...and surprising finding this old thread.
I custom-ordered and received my SSB shells in 1977.
Still playing them exclusively...…....awesome drums get better with age.

One of my kits is a 2000's Gretsch Catalina Ash. I bought it off Craigslist as a "beater" kit and it was pretty beat up. I tried to refinish it but ultimately decided to wrap it and it became too pretty to be a beater. It's now my main gigging kit for one of my bands which plays a lot of outdoor gigs. I've gotten many compliments on the sound of it. I've had my friend a drum builder cut the kick down to a 14" depth and recut the edges on all the drums and now it sounds better than ever and is nice and compact as well.

I have had Renown and New Classic sets in the past and extensively played a friend's 1970's USA Customs. All had their unique strengths but the USA Customs are special. Currently, I have a Catalina Mahogany bop set that I use for jazz combo jamming. I prefer the hardware on my Yamaha Recording Custom set, but Gretsch hardware has improved.

I use different hardware than the main brand too. Some guys think it's sacrilegious. Ha-ha!

My Gretsch USA Custom is my primary gig kit these days.

I like it so much that I expanded it into a shell bank.

And I am also a big fan of their snare drums.
