DMD, the coating on the heads "warms" the sound, so it is more than just cosmetic. Sounds like you're getting ready for a complete head change over!

The coating gets worn off quickly. I think on my toms on gonna try the clear heads. I think the more ringy sound is better than the little warmth you get from the coated heads. But ill let ya know! :>

If you play brushes at all, coated heads are ideal for that because the coating is slightly abrasive and the brushes sound are much more pronounced on a coated head.

Ebony heads have some sort of film or special material either inbetween plies or underneath, producing a very short and dull attack with low end.

i personally do not like coated tom heads but prefer coated on the snare. as stated earlier the diff between the same head in clear or ebony is the sustain with ebony having less.

I've used clear, coated, power dot, pinstripes, even hydrolics...
    My favorite is Remo Pinstripes.
As far as clear pinstripes, or ebony pinstripes - it's purely cosmetics.

I DO use coated for my snares, though.
