Do I understand right? Are those mahagony shells on a jazz kit? If so, I am surprised. I would have thought that a higher pitch would have been preferable on jazz kits. Maybe I've misunderstood the basic jazz sound.

I guess it's in the tuning , head selection and bearing edges. I got this lil kit to thunder pretty nicely! Mahogany is more cost effective also. $600 for the 4 pc shell kit! Great drums!! -HB

mahogany is a good jazz wood because it provides a very low sound
when that low sound is tuned to a higher pitch
it provides a great fatness without harsh overtones
since jazz is mainly about being warm and subtle
    its a good match up
mahogany is more than a one trick pony though
my 16 inch floor tom shakes my ceiling hahaha

Thanks for adding that KJ. Since I'm not even thinking about jazz drumming yet, it really helps me to get a basic understanding before I get there. That's what I like the most about Drum Chat. Half the battle for me is to be able to understand things first. Thanks again!

The Mod set ups are pretty happenin'!
I am not a jazz drummer, I play CCM and dabble in funk and
breakbeat stuff.. I can't say enough good stuff about this little kit! It really do rock! I got it primarily as a rehearsal kit and for practice...It sounds so good that I will be using it for a big Christian worship event that my band is playing for this Sunday night and to lead worship at a local church on Sunday AM! I especially like the fact that the drums fit in the back seat of my Toyota Paseo! lol!! I just got a new Pearl birch kit. Now.. after playing this Gretsch..I'm selling the Pearls and looking into possibly a Gretsch Catalina maple or ash kit! I guess I never gave Gretsch the credit that they deserve.
Funny though...my very first drum kit (age 7) was a Gretsch mid 60's round badge be bop kit that my dad had bought from a family friend for like $75..now at age 45, I find myself gravitating toward Gretsch again. Sure wish I would have kept the 60's kit...hindsight being 20/20 and all. -HB

    My kit sprecs;

5x14" snare (Aquarian Hi energy batter/ stock reso snare side)

    Pearl Hardware:
1000 series boom cymbal arms, AX70 multiclamps (2ea.)
900 series highhat stand, snare stand, boom cymbal stands (2). cymbal boom (telescopic/convertible)
Eliminator powershifter belt drive single kick drum pedal

    Zildjian cymbals:
13.25" K custom hybrid high hats
    10" K splash
    16" Avedis thin crash
    17" A custom crash
    17" K custom dark crash
    18" K custom sessions ride

There is a common mis-conception about drum sizes and there application to various music styles. You can play anything on anything. The earliest pioneers of jazz were playing 26 and 28 bass drums which they got from the marching drums available at the time. The small bass was a late 50's Gretsch innovation, answering the call of their endorsee's, (primarily jazz artists) for smaller stuff, to make easier transport. Bigger is not necessarily better...just bulkier! That's why God gave us microphones and electronics...LOL I play an 18 and with a mike out front I can drive a rock blues or funk band with the best of them!

    all the best...

Yeeeessss! We have another Gretsch convert folks!!!!!! Now you know why I was soooo impressed with the Gretsch Catalina Maple kit when I played it at my local music store! I have a 14X6 snare on the my kit, and I think the tone is absolutely awesome!

I sounds like you're set for a great weekend HB. See if you can get some video of the worship event, or even the worship service, if it's automatically taped. I'd really enjoy seeing you play!

    Blessings to you.

Had my Catalina Jazz out last night for a rehearsal at the church we're leading worship at. on Sunday AM.... I have to say that this little kit is really a surprise! Yeah..I'm looking at another Gretsch shell kit...either a Cat. maple, ash, or maybe a Club mod..or I may break the bank and go for a Renoun Mod...New classic ???? I prolly should stay around Catalina/Renoun??
-HB This weekend should be absolutely AMAZING! will post pix! Possibly vid. and it will be multitracked for a CD worship compilation.. I'm playing the Catalina Jazz for it..My guitar player/sound guru has already commented on the powerhouse sound this little Gretsch is pumping out! I'm STOKED!!
