    Default Making a Subwoofer drum....

In looking on the DW I noticed in the speciality drum section that they had special subwoffer drums. These looked cool and I figured would add some kind of different sound. In my new Modern Drummer magazine, I saw a Yamaha add that had a subkick drum on the front (an actual subwoofer mounted in a drum) the subkick is almost 400 dollars and I assume that the DW one is about the same. My question:

Could I make my own? Could I mount a tom in front of my bass drum (with no bottom head and a loose batter)? or find and old subwoofer and mount it in that same tom?

Yea, it would be fun to try. If you had an old set you could experiment on maybe.

What's the purpose of a subwoofer? I've seen them around Guitar Center and Tony Royster's DW kit, but haven't really specified what changes they make.

it would just add more sub base... but that would be the same as getting a 22, 24, 26 inch bass and tune it low :P It would make a subtle change.
