There's an interesting article on blast beats in the latest DRUM! magazine (page 61). I'm not that into playing them myself. I can't stand hardcore metal and I'm too old for marathon drumming. But it's interesting to me the trend of blast beats and the recent craze with all the metal heads. One guy described it as an extremely fast polka (ya hear that Frank? Your band's gotta work up a fast death metal polka with horns! )

Anyway, the article is pretty good and helps us understand where it all came from and who's doing what with it. I'm amazed at all the approaches to playing it. Some use more fingers, some use more wrist, some use the freehand approach, etc. The guys mentioned in the article (apparently among the fastest) were Flo Mounier, Tim Yeung, and John Merryman.

theres a book called the evolution of blast beats, its basicaly the blast beat bible, and it explains so much about them, and how to make other beats into blasts.

We were all bust starring in awe of him, nothing had to be said is the most likely case.
