Only you can tell...you have to play them to determine the sound you prefer. Best advice is to forget the name on the cymbal and just listen to it.

I agree 100%. Simply play them and let your ears decide.
If you have existing cymbals I would bring one or two with you. Set them on stands and play the ones you are considering buying with them. Sometime what sounds great alone in the store does not blend with what you already have.
Excellent advice guys! I'll only add that I thought I'd be a Zildjian guy all the way, but when I was searching for a ride to go with my Zildjian A Custom crashes, I found a used 20" Sabian Studio AAX ride that was a beautiful compliment.

there are many brands with diferent filosophy about cymbal sound... it is not only Paiste and Zildjian... For sure Paiste is the most expensive brand if that matters.
My advice is... go in a music shop...play as much as you can... choose a brand and a serie and go on.... it is dificult to "marie" diferent brands and diferent series in a cymbal set...
I always buy and sell cymbals because i want to make the perfect cymbal set... i have (always Zildjian) A customs. K. K customs and Avedis... i think most of all i like Avedis series but you always find a very nice cymbal that doesn't fit with the others and then you are confused (as i always am with cymbals)
Keep On Drumming
Great point Saturn! Greetings DD my fellow noob... I think most of the brands, Paiste, Zildjian et al. have lines suited to most all genres of music. Beyond that, like everyone's already has told you its really about how a cymbal sounds to you. I have Zildjian Mastersound K hats which are marketed towards jazz players. I play a bit of jazz but mostly rock and they hold up pretty well despite them being really dark sounding (as compared to As which are much brighter or so i hear)... I also have a cheap tin Solar Sabian stock ride i got with the kit and i still use it coz it holds up pretty well with the hats which are huge soundwise...
I have cymbals from three of the big name guys. I bought what my ears and pocketbook liked. I already read it but I want to say it again; take one or two of your cymbals with you. I bought an 18" Alpha thin crash. It sounded great by itself, but when I put it on my kit and played it just didn't fit with the others. Good luck!!!
They have almost the same quality....
I myslef prefer Zildjian....
But I'm sure a lot of PAISTE fans here....
Try it yourself....Which sounds is the best for ya ?? Warm ? Bright ? Long or Short Sustain ?
And ask the shopkeeper to bring the cymbals....Play it....

Tosco, Paiste, Sabian, Zildjian, meinl, Istanbul, UFIP, Turkish, why dont you just buy one of each, and mix and match?
or the best advice possible, is that you go to the store and see what compliments what you have.

I would say go with what you ears tell you... Most likely they'll whisper something that rhymes with "fiesty" lol

I know this is old but...does anyone consider meinl anymore?
I don't mean the MCS or Classics either, how about Meinl's top of the line cymbals like their Mb20s or Mb10s. I listened to some Mb10s and really liked them. And the Generation X's are really cool as well.
i think it always depends on wat sound you goin for
but alot of people get the names buffed off ahah
Dude it depends what series you get. There is a big difference from ZBT to K custom. I'd rather go with good Zildjians, more reliable.

Yea man I'm ubssesed with Meinl! They sound good when your jamming, practicing, playing in a gig, or recording! Actually I have Classics, but the Souncasters and Byrance are the best:D(I've played them at my pal's house). Plus, they arent as pricey as Zildjians and Sabians.

i dunno where you live but here the meinl's and paiste's are much more expensive plus most paiste cymbals aren't even available here... :(
either you think sounds best to you !! Both have top shelf cymbals
tbh i love Paiste. I dont like Sabian or Zildjian... Paiste are just better in all ways... i think the Zildjian and Sabian rides sounds awful...
but dont get mad at me, its just my opinion :P

I would even bring some cymbals you already own with you to the store when you go to purchase a new cymbal. This way you can find one, no matter what brand, that perfectly compliments all your existing sounds.
And don't feel weird bringing your own cymbals with you. Cymbals are such an expensive and necessary part to your kit and you want to be so sure that you get the right one. Good luck!
