I only use one set of hihats , I would need two sets to actually have them set apart from each other.......

LOL! I have mine about 1/2" - 1" too. But it really depends on you.

they should atleast find you handy.
I can slip my pinky to the end of my nail before I touch them.
Sean, I think you can see already that you are doing fine with your hi-hats. Mine are about 3/4" apart.

I'm the odd man out huh I like to have mine tilted just slightly with about 1/4" open on the end. To me it sounds pretty much the same as when opened more, but with less effort.
1/2 inch for me as well!
Interesting question...never thought about it much less measured. Speaking of which, did all of actually measure the distance? What I do is sit down, situate myself comfortably behind the kit, place my R foot on th bass pedal to guage where my stool should be. Last thing I do is place my L foot on the hi-hat stand and, when, comfortable, push down on the pedal to where my foot feels good and then tighten the clutch. I suppose it would be anywhere from 1/4" to 1/2". What I would also be curious to find out is how tight do many of you adjust the clutch on your to hi-hat cymbal. By that, I mean, do you let the top hat cymbal wobble loosely or keep it fairly tight?
I leave a fair amount of play in my high hat cymbals when tightening the clutch felts I like a good deal of slosh for the Beatle toons that we play etc.
My hats are adjusted similar to what Frank does , my left foot needs to feel comfortable where its at and my hats I will keep tilted to where they are touching slightly on the closed side and open maybe 1//4 to 1/2 inch on the open end of the hats. I keep my top hat on tight too , no wobble for me .
I think its ideal to have the top hat slightly tilted so its touching when half way closed, but thats just me... I keep mine fairly tight coz i play the hat with my toes with the heel up..
about 1/2''
no more than an inch, i adjust it alot, generally 1/4"

when u find the ruler lend it to BTD, he may also want to check his previous meaurement, and re post!!!!heheheheheh
When I'm only playing with one set of hats and I'm playing double bass then they'll be open just enough to slosh around freely, but you won't really see a gap except for one side due to the angle of the bottom hat.
If I'm playing single bass or double bass with two hats, an inch or more.

I change it a lot during shows and/or practices. Usually, closer to an inch or even slightly more, with the bottom hat tilted about a quarter inch. I usually, though, have my foot slightly down on the pedal--I guess it gives me more of a sense of control.

I've got mine at 2 inches. Sounds ace when they're open and trashy, makes flanges sound sloppier though :|
