I saw a similar video on one of the cable channels about a month ago showing the Ludwig factory. It's always interesting knowing how your musical instument it made.

That was a terrific video...thanks for posting! On the Gretsch drum web site, there is a video about the making of their drums which is very informative as well.

i been told by my tech that mapex orion drums take's 10 months to make each drum
im assuming there's quite a bit more quality control going on
this drum takes one week to complete and the orion takes 10 months!! wow, that is some serious quality drums you got there itchie
I play, Gretsch Catalina Birch, 7 piece in the vintage sunburst finish.
RIP, Frank. You will not be forgotten. Missing you, mate
If that is indeed true can you imagine the warehouse space needed to store all of the shells waiting the 10 month completion process to meet production quotas and orders all over the world. I am suspect of that, but I am not saying it isn't true either, I just don't know. it seems highly impracticle is all!
I tend to agree with BTD but, there might be something to the effect of the length of time involved with the Orion collection. I can find Mapex in just about every music store and drum studio I walk into but, I never see an Orion kit displayed. They are expensive and I have no doubt that the manufacturing process is a major reason for the expense. Can you imagine the anxiety of placing a special order and the thrill of playing it for the first time when set up? Be still, my heart.

The reason they take so long is the allow the shell to "cure" in a humidity controlled enviroment before lathing then sit some more and rechecked for roundness. At least what I'm told for my kit wich took 7 months.
Can a heat gun be used on store bought heads and what benifits could I get? Just curious if anyone does this?
Cool vid. Thanks for posting it.
