Thumbs up Cymbal Muting/Dampening/Quieting/Less Sustaining Bluetack...

Hey guys, its probably been done before but i just completely accidentally found a way to quieten etc cymbals. Bluetack!!! I put a small bit on a cymbal and found it had noticeably less sustain and volume. I think the beauty of it is 1) its simple and 2) you can control the sound you want (by the amount and surface area of the bluetack respectively.) As i said its probably been done before and isn't that much of a big deal anyway but just thought i would post it anyway to share it with people. I think it could potentially work a bit for drums although alot more would be needed and might mess up some types of heads.

Wouldn't this work similar to duct tape?

Pretty much yeh but i think as its more solid and heavy it would work better. Plus i don't think it would be as noticeable.

In the "Olden Days," we used duct tape or masking tape and put it on the underside of the cymbals. Some of the local drummers used to be known by the number of tape stripes they used...a "3 - Striper" was a serious dude and really liked a dry ride.

I don't muffle anything with the exception of the stock small DW pillow in my bass drum. I can't stand the sound of a muted cymbal. I understand for practicing you may need to quiet them down but I see no reason beyond that.

    Just my opinion of course.

At times it makes sense. A lot of cymbals have tremendous sustain. Duct tape doesn't really mute it as much as it controls the amount of sustain. This way the same cymbal can be used in more situations.

I don't know maybe it would work. Try it and let us know!! not that it wouldn't add some nice GREEN hues to our cymbals.

I really don't think I'd ever want to be known as a "3 booger drummer!"

I only mute them when we practice. I put duct tape under the bell, makes the volume less and doesnt ruin the sound.
