Currently using a powerstroke as well, I'm not getting the sound I want out of it though, not enough tone and too much thud, but the head is old and probably on its last leg. I have a brand new Remo Ambassador to put on whenever I get around to it.

That would be why you have no tone and all thud.

thats half your problem mate. Depending on what sound you are after, get a good quality head (i use the stock head that came with my kit which is an ebony powerstoke). cut a small port hole, no bigger than about 4 inches (10cm) in diameter and tune it so its just past wrinkle. You may want to add a small amount of dampening to taste so get one of those purpose made pillows (Evans make em I believe) or use a small towel with then ends touching the two heads.

This should make your kick sound a whole lot better. Try a flam slam with a wood beater for a bit more attack depending on what sound you want

I am just waiting for the opportune moment to put my powerstroke 3 on. I like the FLAM SLAM kevlar patches!

I've tried them all and discovered ONLY Aquarian will work for me. Why? Because no other head tunes up low like an Aquarian.

IMHO remo is my snare favorite, evans are my tom favorites, and evans and aquarian are my bass faVorites.

what sound are you going for, and what kind of wood is your bass drum made of?

Glad you're enjoying it. If you really want that head to sing, invest in an Aquarian Regulator resonant head with the side port. A bone rattling combination.
