While searching the net for an idea of what to use as a kick drum with congas I came across a very cool instrument that I had never before seen or heard of. It is very similar to the Puruvian Cajon that most of us are familure with. Like the Cajon, the African Gome (Go-may) is a box drum that you sit on while playing. The gome however has a stretched goat skin head that is tensioned with a set of t-screws inside the drum, as opposed to a thin wood front head like on the Cajon. The player uses their feet to add preasure to the skin in order to change the pitch, which is also a common Cajon technique. Some really amazing sounds comming out of these things, and looks like a blast to play. Check out this video:
