    For those of you that don't know, this is the legendary Bernard Purdie. He's played with everybody from Aretha Franklin to Steely Dan... and hundreds of others.

    An amazing drummer!! Was it him and Jo Jo that played on "Heard It Through The Grapevine" (Marvin Gaye)? If I recall the story, it might have been three drummers who were on that track.
    There's a lot to be said for Time Honored tradition and value.

    Marvin Gaye recorded it with Funk Brothers. They occasionally use 2 drummers but I don't think Purdie is one of them. He might have played for the other versions, may be Gladys Knight or Smokey Robinson.

    Gotta love old purdie. pretty much the most recorded drummer ever, he is a groove monster . check out the purdie shuffle if ya can. love this guy.

    Yes, I have seen the movie about the Funk Brothers but couldn't remember who the drummers were on that recording. Seems to me that there were three of them, each playing a particular part of that groove. However, it's been several years since I had seen that.
