Feel ... or play what is already there if you are doing covers.

Some fills can be very simple, and sometimes it's just on the snare. I would say start with simple snare fills and add toms as you feel it fits in.

i would work on the concepts yourself until you get the feel and then do what Bish prescribed and play to covers to perfect them.

well pne of the easiest, but one of my favorites, is just a basic 1e+a2e+a or 1e+a2e+a3e+a4e+a on the snare then get back into the beat.

Play rudiments between drums. I like to practice my simple paradiddles between the floor and rack toms. Changing drums on the accents.
I have been playing 4 stroke rolls I learned from Vanz Drumming. A general pattern would be like:

    RLRL(snare); RL(rack tom)RL(next rack tom);RLRL(rack tom)RL(next tom)RL(floor tom).

Start it slow and just work it around the kit. If possible, use your foot on the hi hat to keep time.

My drum teacher taught me the same thing as Van did - get the rhythm right for the groove, transpose it into the fill, then add more or take away until you get something creative and dynamic.

Then I started listening to Keith Moon and forgot all of that useful information :> haha, thanks BLD, you reminded me of what I need to do ;o

A lot!! The quality is better. His drums sound really good. He explains things from the ground up. He is really good at explaining. I am buying it for my drummer for Xmas.

OK...I've been following this thread and would like to ask...what style is being played that there is so much trouble coming up with fills? I was behind my set earlier today, while the wife was grocery shopping, and got some practice in on drum fills. I get a ride pattern going.. 1 2--a 3 4--a etc. and begin playing 4 measure fills with 1/4 notes. I will use all of the drums in whatever fashion I think of as well as the cymbals, hi-hats and...rests. Not every single beat has to be played, rests can fit in very effectively. From there, I just go up the ladder...1/8 drum fills...triplet fills (1/4 triplets, 1/8 triplet etc.). Then I will make combinations from each group. Again, everything is spontaneous. After about 15 minutes into this, I then do 8 measure drum fills....16 measures....24 measures and then 32 measures. All-in-all, I can get about a good 45 minute practice session by doing this. I guess I don't see where there would be any problem coming up with ideas for drum fills.
There's a lot to be said for Time Honored tradition and value.
