    Default Snow in the desert

YUP!!! We are getting SNOW today!!! My elevation is about 3,000 feet. The hills around me are getting a nice blanket of the white stuff. The only downfall to this, is people's inability to drive in it!!! Lots of accidents!! PB, if you have ever driven on HWY 62 from I-10 to 29 Palms, you should remember the canyon you drove through. Well, if people knew how to SLOW down, there wouldn't be a metal mess in it. Very Dangerous to wreck in there. Some parts have barely any guardrails. That means, you can fall a distance before hitting the ground! YIKES!! Busy day for the Emergency vehicles! Good thing I work at home!

The only concellation is it will only last a couple of hours before it melts off. I love it when it snows here but it only lasts for a day and then melts away.

    Gotta love it.
I was stationed in the Mohave at 29 Palms in the Marines quite a few years ago, and I remember getting a "dusting" of snow. Man everyone (Californians)freaked, there were several accidents on base. People did not know how to drive in snow.

BUT, us guys from the midwest were glad to see some snow for a change, even if just a "dusting". A few guys even ran out of the barracks to welcome the snow in just their skieves.........if I remember correctly...alcohol was involved in this

getting a bit of snow here right now

Good to see you again WorshipHammer, and if you endured that base you have my respect. My daughter is out there with her husband and daughter, and she can't wait to get to another base when her husband is finished with his current training. Of course, sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for!

It really is amazing what a variety of weather California has. Most people just think of it as warm. And yes, I do know that drive on 62! I really would not want to do it (especially the grade coming into the Morongo Valley) when it's icy!

YUP! That is what they call Elephant ear cactus. I am still not too smart on the different types. I would fear skiing around here! Hitting a cholla might ruin your adventure!

Believe me, I know. I have come from back east. I know how to drive in adverse conditions. People here cannot drive on dry pavement. They love hitting telephone poles out here....

Here are a couple more pics. We got about 5 inches last night. The only semi clear road is the highway that goes through town.

As I recall, BLD, the Morongo Valley is a higher elevation than 29palms, but my daughter called to say that they were getting quite a bit of snow on the base.

Yeah, I think 29 Palms is around 2,000ft. Palm Springs got 1.57inches of rain. The most since the 40's. We hate to see them go without! Lots of flooding there. Not a good day for golfing.

Yes but it is too warm here for it hang around, so it is melting off shortly after it falls. The San Juan Mountains (Colorado Rockies) about 40 miles to the east has received three of four feet in areas.

Not normally. I have seen two other snow events, both lasted for a short while. This is the third in 8 years. Last year we got zero rain.

We're expecting 4 to 5" of new snow over night...normal occurance for here. Last year, it snowed every weekend Thanksgiving into April. No wonder my wife and I are going to Arizona next year to look around for something we might like.
