Hey wallydavid...great stuff and she's got just the voice for it. BTW, don't let my location (Des Moines, IA) fool you...I'm Binghamton born and raised and was at the start of the very rich tradition of Drumming that comes from there. So glad that you joined the Forum...it's a great place to hang.

    Welcome to Drum Chat Wallydavid!

You guys have a great sound sound! I think your singer's voice is awesome, and really does something great for those blues. Your drumming is spot on, and the lead guitar is solid, and not over the top. Oustanding!

Thanks for the kind words! We actually sound a lot better now. Those recordings were pretty early on. We will be recording new tunes after the 1st of the year. Our arrangements are a lot tighter and the playing is better and more relaxed.

Does not exist! The cleaned it all up. I actually went to RIT in the early 80's. I'm not from here originally. I grew up in Philly. Moved here in 2000. They got rid of the Can of Worms. Now just nice, clean highways.

Well, then I can't wait to hear how you guys sound now!

BTW, has anybody said that your female vocalist has a Janice Joplin sound? Janice was more gravelly, but there is something in your vocalist's sound that reminds me of Janice Joplin.

Thanks pastor bob! I can't wait to record them! I've heard the term Torch singer but also a smother Janice. As she has become more comfortable with our songs, she has been bringing a bit more grit!

Can I get some feedback on my drum sound? I have Evans Genera G2 coated batters on the toms with Evans E-Rings. Not sure of the reso heads but they are clear single ply I guess. The bass drum has a proted reso. I'm not sure of the bass batter head (the kid is at my bass player's house right now). It has an internal muffling ring and a felt strip inside as well. The Jupiter Snare has the stock Pearl reso head and a new Remo Vintage batter.

Hi Wally...I have to tell you that I think you have a helluva a good band. Everything clicks nicely with the ensemble. I really like to sound of your cymbals but I wasn't so much about the drums. The snare sounded "Lifeless" to me as did the toms. The drums did not get in the way of the ban or the vocalist and that is a good thing. I just felt a little disappointed that they didn't "Sing" just a bit more. The Remo Vintage batter may not be the best choice for your playing. It is a bit Darker, slightly thicker, and well suited to a wood shell drum. I use a Slingerland maple snare (1960's) with a Jazz Trio. I have the Aquarian Vintage batter on it. It is sensitive but not as "Live" as my Ludwig Supraphonic. I do, however, use the SupraPhonic with my Big Band. It has a bit more "Zing" and sounds good with the ensemble. However, this is just my opinion. I like to think that every drum needs to resonate just a bit. I have played on the Yamaha Stage Customs and have directed a high school jazz ensemble using this kit. I didn't like the drums. "Lifeless" is the best I can describe what I was hearing. A few years later, the band had upgraded to Yamaha Custom Maples with Evans coated heads. Vast improvement.

Thanks for the great input. We will be playing our first gig on Saturday at a private party. Actually, it is for the guitar player's brother, who lives in CA and is a great guitar player in his own right. He is coming back for a visit, so this is going to be a huge all-day jam fest with all his old music buddies from town. The bass player and I will be rhythm section for the whole thing and we'll also play as a band as well. I can't wait.

My crashes are both late 70's/early 80's Zildjians. One is a 16" thin and the other is an 18" medium. I do love the sound of them. The 16 sounds almost sounds like glass exploding, don't you think? The 18 takes a little longer to peak. The ride is an old 20" Sabian medium ride.

As for the drums, I think the snare sounds better now as I have worked on the tuning some more. Do you think I should just try to tune the toms w/o the E Rings?

    Hey Wally!

I like the band, like the music, and your drumming is solid bro!

I'm not sure why that snare isn't popping out more, but I would have to say take those E-rings off and let the resonance come out. My thinking is that your drums would cut through the mix a little better....then again I'm one who likes to hear the drums a little more dominant. I understand you're playing a lot of blues tunes, but I would still like to hear more crack from that snare and more tone from the toms.

I use E-rings on my Yamahas in church where sound dynamics are always a concern, and I also use Coated Ambassadors on the batters. But with my band I play em wide open. I think that might make a lot of difference. And if not, then I would go to some more "open" batter heads.

That said, your playing style is perfect for what you're playing....I think it sounds great!
