Is that the phenolic shell Johnny G?
I was told it's a mix of fiberglass and plastic? Something like that. Never heard the term you used for it.

I think I love to play the drums simply because you get to hit 'em!!!
Sounds like phenolic, I think its a plastic like synthetic material like the reddish/brown material used in circuit boards,I think they're fairly rare drums, stay perfectly round and sound very good..post a pic of the inside when you can,I know the phenolic is a reddish/brown color, that's my extent of knowledge on these
beautiful finish on that.

Because you wanted to see the inside...
There's that reddish-brown you described. Phenolic is neither wood resin nor fiberglass, but purely a chemical composition similar to Bakelite, if you can believe everything you read online. The shell is pretty thin and sounds like some of the metal shell snares I have heard. Nice ping. Great response. I want a President's kit to match now.
Does anybody know a way to date this snare? Was the red oyster only available for certain years, perhaps?
Thanks. Thrilled to be in the Pearl family, too.

all the best...
PEARL MMX GUYS! I posted in the General drum forum about a possible trade between my PDP Platinum kit and a Pearl MMX kit. Can anyone go to that post and give me your opinion please!? Thank you.
Life, like drumming, is only as good as you make it.
Speaking of that, is there a way to tell if a Masters is an MMX or an MCX by looking? I was looking at a used Masters from late 90's and all it says on the badge is "Pearl masters custom made in taiwan"
Also why did pearl go away from the 4-ply MMX?

Bakelite is phenolic, which is a plastic in the thermoset family. That means the raw powdered material fuses and becomes forever solid when exposed to heat and can't be re-melted, as opposed to thermoform plastic which melts when exposed to sufficient heat and can be remelted as many times as you want though its properties will diminish with each melt cycle.
Distributor caps (when they were in existence) and many things that may be exposed to heat in their application are made of phenolic.
The shell pictured looks to be the right color to be phenolic.

^ now you need a throne with wheels.
Wow, Rich the set up is almost like Neil Peart's. I mean surrounded in drums. Your set would be great for practicing, get sick of one kit rotate your seat and play on another. So many choices man.

lol....Great idea!
Gilles, thanks to your advice on the grounding sheet and all of the great advice you've given me here throughout the years, I've been feeling much better to a point, I'm back out in the garage tinkering with the kits. When I'm up on that 8 foot ladder looking down at what I've created, I think of you guys here on DC! Thanks to you guys!!
