It will make it sound subtly different than an all cherry shell. However, some exterior veneers can have a greater effect than others. John Good cooked up his VLT and VLX shells based on how exotic exteriors with a vertical grain would routinely produce a lower fundamental note than standard shells of the same size. So it will affect it, but how much will depend on what type of wood and grain orientation. FWIW I just had an up close look at a DW cherry kit with a natural satin finish and it is absolutely frigging gorgeous. Looks and sound.
SunDog - Thanks for the opinions. I think I'm inclined to agree with how you described things. I'm quite sure one layer of veneer doesn't make a huge amount of difference, but nice to get another thought on it. Also glad to hear your thoughts on the Cherry kit. I think that Cherry itself is pretty enough, from the aesthetic end of things, to just do 100% Cherry. I am a fan of gloss over satin, but that's just what trips one's trigger. I think nickel hardware, with just that bit more 'warmth' in the color (as compared to chrome), makes it a very nice match with the Cherry. I'm just waiting for some guitars to sell to place my order

Thanks Eyepea. I really need to get some good batters for the toms. The DW stock heads don't do it for me.

What are you going to put on the batters then? Its not like stock DW heads are crappy, unless things have changed....

Guess that came across wrong. It's not they are crappy by any means. They will either be replaced with Emperors or Coated Emperors.

    Cool Re:my first DW kit

not sure how to post this but I just got a DW kit collectors series ssc shells.
specialty laquer tobacco sunburst,8x12 vlt,9x13 vlt,10x13 vlt,16x16 Xshell,16x18 vlx,14x24 vlx. original owner said he ordered two 13" toms for set up options, 12x8 and 13x9 like higher tuning and the 13x10 likes lower tuning. I guess I can understand that. The kit is mint and sounds great. I put vintage coated emperors over the stock DW reso heads. Tell me how to post pictures please.

    Thanks, Dave

Ill post pics late (i don't know how to yet so if someone can help that would be great). It is a cherry to black fade. with black chrome hardware. The fade on the toms is very small it is mostly on the bass drum where it shows the fade. The lugs help it go into the fade though. In the current light it is really dark, however in the sunday in pops and has a nice bright look to it. And sounds amazing.
