This info is above and beyond...and truly helpful!!

You will love your Gretsch drums. The current configuration for most mid and high level drumsets usually includes a "virgin" bass drum - ie, one with no tom mounts built in. This is the case because many drummers prefer mounting their upper tom(s) on a separate stand for the supposed superior isolation this offers. You can either install a bass drum mounted tom(s) mount (in the traditional manner), or mount your tom(s) on a separate tom stand.

Since the RN1 kit has two upper toms, and you decide to stand-mount them, you will need a double tom stand such as the Gibraltar 6000 or 9000 series tom mount stand. There are a number of versions within these series (see them at. You may choose either a double mount (two toms) or a triple mount (two toms and a cymbal boom) with an array of leg systems to choose from.

If you want to mount the toms over the bass drum (in a traditional manner) you may do that, too, by using two tom mount stands. Using this method would allow you to have traditional mounting while avoiding any drilling into the bass drum shell (the resale value of a virgin drum is much higher that one that has been drilled for a double tom mount. This method (one double tom mount stand on either side of the bd) will also allow you to add a cymbal boom arm to the unused holes on the stand, thus saving you the expense of buying two cymbal stands.

Peruse the photos of members' setups on this site and you will come across the type of mounting option that will suit you.

Have fun playing, and share that joy with the audience.

Could go one of two ways. The status quo maintains and Gretsch remains a big drum brand, or else Gretsch is phased out and the value of my drums will sky rocket.

    all the best...

hope I don't offend the Gretsch purest here.
here is my mostly Gretsch bop kit.

    13 x 9 Gretsch
    14 x 14 Gretsch
    18 x 14 Tama custom (hahaha)
    14 x 5.5 Ludwig

I just wanted to make a kit I could play at home, while my Yamaha oak customs were at the studio. I bought the 13 x 9 as a bare shell from ebay. it had the silver inner coating and the orange and white label. i restored it the best i could, but it never had that warm, deep sound i like. its bright, and it sounds great, it just lacks sustain, i guess is the best way to put it. so i have been pricing 12 x 8 Gretsch toms. i wanted a round badge drum, with 30 degree bearing edge. i started pricing the new Brooklyn series. best i could get from a shop, was $500.99, with a 3-6 month wait. Expensive. so i ask this person how my my 7 piece oak customs are worth, he tells me sight unseen, he would give $650.00, for the whole kit. i laughed as i hung up.
last Tuesday, i found a guy on ebay selling a Brand New 12 x 8 Brooklyn tom for $300.00. i pulled the trigger.

    my mutt kit

it sounds amazing, and i am seriously thinking about taking the mutt kit to the studio and bringing the yamahas home.

Just be patient. It took some time before my first posts showed up, too, and pictures took a while yet. This is a good site, and the admins are quite dedicated to keeping that way. Once you are approved you will have smooth sailing from there on out.

    Welcome aboard!

I also going to change the tom heads. Think I'm going Emperor. I use to use them.

Haven't had the chance playing them yet. How is the 14" tom when it comes to bottom end? Will I miss a 16" tom for pop, rock, funk etc you think?

You may miss the 16 if those are the genres you play most. The 14 to me has a rounder jazzier sound but with some bottom.

    all the best...

Nice looking kit, Daniel! When I'm able to afford a good used kit, I want to try some Renowns, too.

When I eventually find a kit, my problem will be in finding an alternative for those RIMS-style suspension mounts. I hate RIMS! On my current kit I simply replaced them with Pearl ISS mounts, which proved to be ideal. That will not be possible with the Renown kit due to those gorgeous cast hoops.

Only alternative I've come up with so far is to use one of the new Ludwig Atlas receivers that replaces one of the lugs and allows the use of L-rod style arms.

Anyway, post some more pics when you get the drums set up, Daniel. And tell us how they sound with the Emperors.
