Default Sticks make ugly marks on tom heads

I'm a beginner player, or a bit above that I s'pose, and whenever I play my Toms, my sticks seem to hit the drum and 'slide' for a fraction of a second, creating an ugly white mark. I don't mind a few on a head, but after two sessions of drumming, half my head is all in ugly white marks.

This is probably a bad habit I have to fix, but is there any way of getting rid of these marks? A tiny bit of water doesn't help much. What do people use to clean heads (if they rarely have too).

    Hope someone can help,

thats just normal wear,if you're having a problem with sliding try adjusting the toms
from jazz to metal, the broader your spectrum the better you are

I hate to say it, Tragesty, but Daniel is right. If you are playing your kit regularly, the heads should be changed out every 3-4 months for optimum sound quality. In between, you get marks on the clear heads, or the coating wears off on the coated heads. It's the nature of the beast. Daniel is also right that if you are not able to hit the center of the head without "sliding," you should adjust your toms closer to you, or you should adjust the angle of the toms. Make sure we get a pic of your kit, and then we can make recommendations for you set up. Almost everyone begins their drumming by learning how to set things up properly.

What kind of sticks do you use? I previously used the Travis Barker because I liked their weight and longer reach but it got to be expensive and they would leave white streaks on my toms and cymbals because of their white color.

If it bothers you so much tilt the drums more jazz style, and hit less hard. But I agree, nothing is more annoying then streaks on the heads.

I think it's like when sombody gets their first guitar and realizes that playing it is messing up the finish on the maple fret board.

You know something...nothing looks quite as beautiful as a gleaming drum set with pristine white heads. Unfortunately, it's not going to last...not if you're going to play them. There just are some things that can't be helped and this is one of them. So, you go along with it and, before you know it, it'll be time to change out the heads and, once again, you get to recapture that look. What helps me is that, in the meantime, I learn about different heads and when it's time, I get to try those other heads I've only read about.

The snare head that came with my vision kit likes to spread itself all over the kit... the white coating comes off on the sticks and is then transferred to the toms... soon enough, I'll have coated tom heads and an non-coated snare head.

    LMAO!!!!!

It probably is your snare head, if you are using the stock head of a beginner kit then that might be why its happening so fast.

Every head gets marks on it, you are hitting mylar this happens.

but what kind of head are you using? it could be the head of the snare, my friends toms and cymbals have white paiste like stick marks because the white on his snare sticks on the sticks then to everything else.

Ummm...not me. They can lose their coating, but once they get "dents" it's time to change the heads out

I always like it when I replace my snare head and when I remove the old one it looks like all pitted out in the middle, like a shallow bowl!
Like drumslave said, it reminds me of how much work I've done on it!

rofl, even our toms at school do that mate..

most of the time for us, we hit the logo on the drum head, thus imprinting a black mark on our sticks, which are then carried on to the drum head

but we fix it easily about once every two months....i just don't know how O.o!
