    Default Snare head recommendations

I cleaned up the old 1984 Tama Imperialstar Steel Snare I have and it looks great! Decided I'm probably not going to sell it, and just keep it as an extra.

Right now it has a relatively new Evans Reverse Dot on it but I don't love the sound it makes. Any recommendations on heads on both sides?

I play a lot of rock/alternative and hard rock, some punk.

Absolutely what he said. The ambassador is the most versatile head on the planet, excellent for any application.

Are ambassador's single or double ply? I play fairly heavy and don't want to wear it out too soon.

Should I bother changing the reso head? It seemed to help a lot on my toms.

They are a single ply, but I too play very heavy(just check out my vids), and I still have yet to break a head, they are amazing, if you do a search on your favorite drummers, I guarantee this is the head they are using on there snare drum.

I'll give it a shot then. I'm guessing the reverse dot is what is making it sound so flat, so I'm open.

I've had ambassadors in the past.

Actually the head with the reverse dot is an Emperor X and it is a horrible head, I can't stand that head. Just your good single ply coated Ambassador is what I am referring to.

I suggest the Aquarian Hi-Energy. It's very durable (2-ply with a power dot) and it sounds great, and is a very versatile head. It can't be tuned too low, but it sounds good either medium or very tight.

Ambassador is a 10ML, single ply head that will do you just fine.

Kaos, I insist you think about giving the Aquarian Texture Coated a try. I'm a lover of the Ambassador too but the coating on the Aquarian is WAAYYY tougher and the sound is just a little bit better to my ears.

Given that you and I shared a dislike of the EC2's, I'll definitely consider it strongly.

Remo Emporer X Coated with black do underside. My 2nd snare head, and it sounded amazing. I currently use an Evans EC Reverse Dot head, and I love the sound it makes.

Depends on what reso you have at the moment and what condition it is in. I recently put a ambassador hazy on and sounds really nice. The Evans hazy 300 is the equivelant if you prefer. ambassador batter with hazy is a really nice combination. For extra durability go the emperor which is a two ply 7 mil
I play, Gretsch Catalina Birch, 7 piece in the vintage sunburst finish.

The condition of the reso isn't bad, but it's the original from 1984. That's what happened with my toms. Never changed them cause I figured how could they wear out. Did a lot in terms of sound.

Just that Ive gone from remo to evans and have pretty much used them all over the years and have found that with the way I tune and my drums I get the sound I want out of the EC2s but thats just me. NUFF SAID but I do still use coated Ambassador on my metel snare

I agree about Evans in general. I just put on new G2's and G1's for reso on all my toms and I absolutely love the sound. Had Remo Pinstripes for a long time (OEM), then got black dots which I didn't like.

My personal taste isn't to everyones. I have the Mapex/Remo (Ambassador I think) stock side head, and an Emperor X Coated head for my batter. It took a hell of a lot of work and patience, but I got it sounding so sweet it's unbelievable =] And with the help of and Evans E-Ring.

    My snare is god
