Default Reliability of used Roland Kits

Does anyone have any thoughts on the reliability/lifespan of Roland kits?
I am considering buying a used TD3 with mesh snare. It is priced at $800 CDN dollars and is 2 1/2 years old. A new one goes for about $1350 including taxes.
I am just a little worried about no warranty and not knowing if the kit has been abused.
    Any input appreciated.

    Can you play them first?

If they play fine then I would think you are OK.

I have had my roland kit for 4+ years now

Yes I can try them out first.
Does that seem a reasonable price?

    Thanks for the reply.

It's a reasonable price if the pads for the toms and kick (especially the kick) are still in good working order. The biggest problem faced with the lower end kits is the rubber pads becoming less sensitive, or requiring you to hit a certain spot to get the right sound. This is especially true with kicks - although the td3 i think uses on of the fake pedal clicker things (kinda like the drums on the game rock band) so this might not be a problem, but the tom pads may very well be shot. Play first and as long as you don't have to try hard to get the right sound, i wouldn't see a problem with it.

    thanks crazyman,

Pretty sure is is a regular kick pad used with a regular bass pedal on this set.
I'll try them out and see how they sound.

As stated, play them softly and see if they mis trigger, play fast rolls on each pad an listen for the the same thing.

As for the price, see what they sell for new and also look at completed auctions on ebay and see what they went for. This will give you an idea of a fail price.

Thanks for all the advice. I will try them out. I am o.k. with the price I guess but I would rather they were only a year old rather than close to 3 years old.

    Cheers

Well, I went and looked at the kit today. All in all it was in good shape. The pads seemed in good condition and triggered properly.
The only problem was there was very little volume from the hi-hat pedal when closing it. The guy said it was that way since he had it.
We played around a bit but could not find a way to increase the volume.
I tried a set at a music store and the volume was much higher.
Would this be a pedal problem?
