I'd love to say something like The Doors, Black Sabbath, Led Zep, or <insert cool band name here>, but the pathetic truth, IIRC, is the 45 of "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" by Cher.
Wow, that really hurt to admit that .
Here's a culture shock. I first encountered KISS at a local show before anyone had heard them. Around '73-4, I think. We were there to see ZZTOP.
As a musician/stage performer I am always watching the setups and was noticing how tall all the vocal mic stands were before KISS came out. (Keep in mind, I didn't know or had seen anything about KISS.) They were just another name on the ticket. Meatloaf was also on the ticket so we were going to see two well known bands and one no-name [KISS].
So again, I'm baffled as to why all the stage hands were shorter than the mic stands they were carrying. Well, when KISS came on stage to play their show, needless to say, everyone was blown away.
And of course I had to report back to the band about this new band so we were scrambling to buy the (eeeeeeek) 8-track tapes and begin learning the songs to play live. We killed.
Now, when I revisit and listen to them, they were really very poorly recorded and I believe done with one take. I hear a lot of spots where the music isn't together and some parts really were NOT good.
I've really changed my outlook on the quality of musicians that KISS really wasn't, but their show made up for any misgivings of the music.

That's a great story Bish!
I was about 5 years old and my brother got KISS - Alive! He showed me who Gene Simmons was and I was so hooked it wasn't even funny.
The old recordings were sloppy as hell, but they were such great performers, that their musical abilities were secondary. Kinda unique to say the least.
The first record I ever bought was the Detroit Rock City 45rpm, with Beth as the B side. I stole a silver dollar from my dad's coin collection to buy it. Damn thing was probably worth $20 and I used it on a 99 cent record! LOL!!!
My first complete album was also KISS - Creatures of the night, when I was 11 back in 1982.

Wow, how do you guys remember specifics? I'm also the youngest of 4, and we're a total of 4 years apart, so the music was shared.
I can say that early albums were KISS (all the albums), Bat out of Hell by Meatloaf, Best of Steve Miller, and the Stranger by Billy Joel. Love Gun might have been first since that was 73, but I was 5, so it was probably bought by my brother who would have been 8.
My first CD was right when CD's came out and I think it was in '82?. I'm guessing it was a Rush CD since my brother, also a drummer, and I were huge into them. My guess is it was Moving Pictures.
Of course my parents had records too. The earliest I know of, which I still have, is "Get Yer Ya Ya's Out" by the Stones. Have some early Janice Joplin and Hendrix too. Not sure of their condition.
BTW, Monster Mash is a great song. We've done it several times at Halloween gigs. The Misfits covered it live in the late 80's I think.

I never have any money to buy CD's (no music store here anyway, unless you count The Warehouse, and they never have anything good), so I just use an online YouTube downloader and download songs from YouTube.

Dad and Mom got our very first console stereo in 1968. Shortly after our very first COLOR TV!! Some of you younger folks are wondering "What's a console stereo?" Well, it was an ornate wooden cabinet with a record player and FM radio tuner and some built in speakers covered with some embroidered cloth. Just trust me when I tell you it's now an antique. Anyway, we went record shopping and my younger brother and I picked out a "Cowsills Greatest Hits" album Don't laugh too hard, I was only 10 years old. To exonerate myself, the first album I bought with my own dough was Alice Coopers "Love It To Death" a few years later. And yes, I had to play it on the console stereo. After this came the 8-track era, but that's a whole nother story
