If you want that classic hip hop/dance "pop" to your snare, a piccolo cranked way high will be awesome.

Drummers can be very tempomental.....
The best hip hop kits are usually electronic, in all honesty. You'll struggle to replicate that sound elsewhere.
Check out ?uestlove though, he uses a lot of compression to get that classic hip hop sound. That kind of experimentation is cool.

yeah, something small cranked way up high should get that pop your looking for -might not have to be a piccolo though....experiment at your local music shop and see what you like
"What consumes your mind, controls your life" - So, what consumes your mind?
Check out where they get their samples from as well - like, the drummers who actually played on what they're sampling, then check out what kind of kits they used. Live hip hop is a very different experience to what you hear on the album.

as far as i can see live, all the big hip hop guys use a thinner snare ...it not quite a piccolo but its a high pitch, there's usually a click track and huge compression

thanks everyone. i am thinking of a piccolo so far.
General rule of thum is, the smaller the diameter, the better.
