Hey guys, I'm looking into getting a firepod (or some other recording interface) All of them seem to use firewire, However I have a laptop that doesn't have a firewire input. I was told a Firewire to USB converter doen't exist. Anyone know of any solutions?

    How old is your laptop?

Does it have a PCMCIA slot? Does it have firewire?

Relatively new, I bought it about 4 months ago. I have no idea if it has any kind of firewire capabilities all I know is that I don't see a firewire input on it anywhere.

Nevermind about the firewire. I see the laptop doesn't have it.

However, I have something that uses PCMCIA as my laptop is about 5 years old or more and it handles the IEEE1394 which is what most recording devices, I've found, use.

    Would something like this work?

OK, most newer laptops don't even have PCMCIA any longer either. It's getting less friendly in my experiences.

I have no idea what PCMCIA is, this is the first I've heard of it.

That little slot or the right wouldn't happen to be it would it?

Oh ok, I looked into it a little bit more. That slot on the far right of the laptop is called an express card slot, made for PCMCIA devices, like the one Bish posted. And they act as a firewire and/or a usb2 adapter for laptops.

You need to get an Express Firewire card. I just got one for my laptop. Express Card's are just a newer, slightly different, version of PCMCIA cards.

Mine was like $50, and works like a charm. I'm using it for video capture.

Check newegg.com or buy.com. Search for something like this:

One more thing, is really any massive difference between usb2 and firewire at all? I actually found an interface that can go through usb2 rather then firewire.

Firewire is faster in it's most recent incarnation, not that you would notice much of a difference. There are usb2.0 and firewire recording devices, but firewire is always considered higher end.

Oh and i forgot. soon as you start running through converters etc. Your killing your firewire speeds. And in doing that your lowering the recording speed, quality, and amount of tracks to record on. Thats why i said build a recording computer.

plus terrabite harddrives are really cheap, so you can spend forever trying to fill it up
