There are a lot of resources online about the different materials and their sounds. I just sold my steel snare to try a maple one. After playing two woods snare, I just like the warmth of the sound a little better.
I just bought a used Tama Artwood on EBay for $150 US, and there are usually a few on for around that price.
From what I'm told Black Panther's are amazing, especially the birdseye maple. The freebies that people got with their Mapex kits aren't as good, but still good. The only problem was they were out of my price range.

Like kaosotis said, maple = warm. Metal snares are generally more 'ringy' and bright. I've got a 6.5" deep Pearl brass snare and the crack of the rimshot will split your skull.

maple has high end sound; birch has low end that almost sounds like reverb, bubinga sounds dark like birch but with more sustain; acrylic is really loud and bright; steel has the brightest sound of all metals; copper has a dark metallic sound to it; brass has a high end but also has warmness to it also; basswood is for short-sustained low end tone, but when combined with birch it makes an even sound; poplar sounds like maple but a bit more bright- making it maple's sleazy cousin; ash is a loud wood which sounds like maple but projects better and is less expensive; oak is the loudest of all the woods, and well suited for aggressive styles; finally mahogany is a wood resembling birch and maple put together, sort of like how oak is, but a less expensive alternative, and takes finishes well. there is no one perfect shell material, its just something you should experiment on and fool with. happy hunting
free floating - any brand -any shell type
.....might be a bit loud in some venues tho
there is no way any of us can tell you what you will like. You need to go play as many snares as you can. Your ears will tell you when you have found the one for you.
There are so many great snares out there, the choices are almost endless.
maple has high end sound; birch has low end that almost sounds like reverb,
********************************
Maple for the warm, resonant sound and Birch for the brighter sound and sharper attack.
There's a lot to be said for Time Honored tradition and value.
