    Default The Audition

    Hey gang,

I took your advice and found a cover band looking for a drummer on Craigs list.

We emailed back and forth, and they want me to audition Saturday evening.

They gave me a list of songs that they do, so I need to learn them. They're all straight 4/4 and within my skill set so I should be fine but here's the question....

Do I learn the songs note for note, or just the arraingements and jazz 'em up a pinch, like I did in the Poison video I made? I mean, I only have 2 days. I assume that there will be some margain for error only having 2 days to prepare...

    The Audition songs are...

    Buck Cherry - Crazy Bit*h
    Green Day - American Idiot
    Finger 11 - Paralyzer
    Sublime - Santeria
Cheap Trick - I want you to want me

    Additional tunes they do are...

    Metallica - Enter Sandman
The Ataris - Boys Of Summer
Lit – My Own Worst Enemy
    Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta
Jet - Are You Gonna Be My Girl
The Killers - Somebody Told Me
Bryan Adams - Summer Of 69
    Blink 182 - Dam*it
My Chemical Romance - Dance Floor Anthem

    Whatcha think???

in my experiance and that is about 30 years worth

Learn the signature licks that everybody knows and stay true to the feel of the song, nail the intros, breaks and endings an you should be golden.

It is very doubtful they are playing note for note either.

Then as time goes on you can revisit the tunes and take the time to learn the parts that challenge you.

This way you get through the audition, then you can go back and improve your vocabulary.

And the main thing is have fun, after all isn't that why you are doing it?

    ?

    This.
Plus be the first person there. Make sure your drums are in tune and mechanically ready to go before you leave the house. Set up and tear down in as little time as possible, if your tom is 1/4" off dont worry about it. Be sober and straight!!!!! Leave the wife/girlfriend at home. Let them suggest bathroom/smoke breaks. Dont trash talk former bands or thier former bandmates.
    Have Fun!!

Yep, what they said. Best advice I think you could get.

Good luck, and make sure you let us know how it went CD!!

You'll be fine. You have confidence in yourself, and that shows in your playing.

Thanks RM, that's what I thought. I guess it's the rust talking. I haven't played with other musicians in years so I'm a bit self-conscious. (sp?)

LOL, one tune, Santeria is a constant shuffle on the hh and that's very challenging for me to keep that bounce steady. I haven't shuffled in soooooo long.

Thanks Red. The audition is at a rehearsal studio which sometimes just require your pedals and cymbals and play the house kit.

I have an email into them asking if I need my own kit, so I'm gonna pick up the gold remo kit from my brother's and clean/tune it tonight, just in case I need it.

    "Finger 11 - Paralyzer"

My band is working on learning this song, how is the bridge/breakdown part coming for you CD? I am having a heck of time getting all the parts to fit together.

Relax and have fun , dont try to out-do the rest of the band , dont drag or speed up , a good positive attitude is also best to have during auditions too cause you got to fit in good with the rest of the band . You'll do fine. Best of luck.

What everybody else said, CD--this is not the time to dazzle them by overplaying!!! And as 2slow said, "relax, relax, relax!"

    The audition is today, right?

    Rock dem drums, Kevin!
keep the beat goin' ... Don't keep it to yourself!

Some really good advice already given. One thing I would add is, In general they person who gets the job, and certainly the person who keeps the job is the one who makes the BAND sound and feel better, not who tries to make himself sound better.

Apart from that, relax and enjoy it.

OH BTW Remo kits, I had one for a few years, Toured the world with it, Nice sounding kit, Toms really cut through.

Well boys & girls.... I got hosed today.

2 unanswered emails to them as to the location of the studio and the time to show up for the audition.

If they're not professional enough to reply, then they're not professional enough for me to play for.

Looks like I'm going out for pizza and beers instead, so it aint all bad.

Sorry CD. I guess it is better they didn't reply. I have been to so many auditions, and I like to think I am auditioning the band. Seen way too many drug users, and know that it wouldn't work out. I wish they never returned my call, it would've saved time and aggravation! There is something better for you!
