Default DW MX Maple kit - advice

    Looking for some advice,

I have come across a Pacific DW MX Maple kit - shells only. Asking price is $350 - I can probably get them for about $325. Very good to excellent condition - just some minor scratches from normal use. I will see and play them this weekend. Kit is about 4 years old. The pics of the drums look very nice. New coated remo ambassadors heads.

I've been playing about 2 years and have a nice Union Birch Kit that sounds great. I just joined a band and started playing out for the first time. I would like to have a kit "in the bags" and a practice set that is the same size. I was looking a cheap shell pack maybe $200 but this caught my eye and for the extra 100 it would be sweet to have 2 nice kits. Hells Bells - it may sound better than what I'm using.

    10x8 tom
    12x9 tom
    14x12 tom
    14x5 snare
    22x18 bass

So just looking for advice - Do you think the price is fair? Anyone have a DW MX kit or had one. I don't have much experience - so any help would be great. Thanks

    Hey Dave,

First off, and I have to say this, it's a PDP MX. They might be made by DW but are not DW.

And it doesn't sound too bad. I would have to see it. But I used to have a PDP kit and it was a great set of drums. See if you can get them down to $300 or less?

I think these ran around $699 new lowest discount price. They are probably a better set than the Unions you currently own. If you can get them for $325 pull the trigger.

FFD, if it's in good shape, and it has new heads, I would say go for it. Depending on what style of music you play, you may be putting different heads on though, so I would try to get him down to the $300 point if he'll go. You can always settle for $325.

I have a set of MX's and they are great drums for the price. I've had Tama,Pearl and Ludwig and I am more satisified with these than any others. The other kits mentioned were all either top end kits or upper mid range kits. I would say go for it. John

Looks and sounds like a great buy to me.. I had a set of X7s (poplar shells) and they were great sounding kits for the money! I actually prefer PDP maple drums over Drum Workshop.. I know,, weird hey? -Les

I just got a PDP X7 series, 7 piece set. I paid more than $325 and I couldn't be happier. So I'm guessing you'll be happy with that set too, for that price. Go play it and let us know what you think. If you get it, let's see those pics!

Just picked up PDP's on Saturday. The toms and snare are flawless. The bass has some scratches on it. It looks like the toms fell on it. The hardware is very nice and set up is very quick. I changed the heads, I had an extra set of coated pinstripes - Remo. He said the heads were newer but they looked and sounded like crap. The set also needed to be tuned. But I read a lot of reviews and everyone that has this kit loves it - so I took them. I can't wait to mic the bass it sounds great - it has a Aquarian super kick I head on it. I need to get a PDP bass head with the logo for the front and I'll be set. I added pics to this tread - not sure if I need to start a new one.drums pdp 003.jpg
