I've noticed a problem I have that when I do an accent on the kick drum, I reflexively accent the cymbal -- and vice versa.

I'd like to come up with some exercises to lick this bad habit. Do others have this problem and what are you doing to kick it?

What I've been doing so far is playing even 16ths on the cymbal and 1 measure of 1/4 note bass drum and 1 measure of kick drum with the accents. High-hat on the quarter and snare on 2 and 4.

I was going to then restart Chapin's Advanced Techniques and start recording myself. What do yall think?

Just work on your beat pressure and independence. Start doing more with your right hand and less with your right foot, mess the dynamics up. Get control over your limbs.

I have the same problem and it bugs the heck out of me. I've been doing it for twenty years and doubt I'll be able to stop.

When I struggled with this I just played until I found something that I didn't like, isolated it, looped it and slowed it down until I could nail it properly. I repeated it at the slow speed until I didn't want to play drums anymore (as in sell them all and be done). That usually allowed me to go back and play it full speed with no problem... some things are easy to build muscle memory for.

I guess since I play open handed style, I probably shouldn't say anything or I'll just confuse everybody.
