    Default Washy Hi-Hat?

I have a DVD which teaches the washy hi-hat technique (Among other things), which is when you have the hi-hat slightly open but only just closed so it creates a washy sound, and it's commonly used in hard rock. I was wondering, how do i write that? do i write it's open, closed, or is there something special for it?
    Thanks in advance.

As far as I can remember...and it's been a loooong time since I have read sheet music for the drum kit, but I recall seeing the closed Hi-Hat written with an X, and open with a circle.

Could be wrong. And I don't know about specifically for the washy sound...could be up to the player reading the sheet music for their own take on it unless it's written out in a legend at the top.

Usually, you write it as 'loose high hats' just before the notation.

    Welcome to Drum Chat Jamobra!

You will find that drum notation is more or less standardized, but there is still variation in how things are written. The "washy," or "sizzle" hi-hat sound that you are describing is one of those less standardized things. The notation that has been described is correct, but exactly how to write it varies. Some use a "tie" to tie the open and closed symbols together to indicate the slight opening of the cymbals to get the "sizzle." Some indicate it as Ethel has described. I would check the internet by Googling "drum notation key" to see what is commonly used.

Agreed. If you are writing the music, this is a good technique as it serves as a reminder to you, and it lets others read yours.

Hi hats, when played "Naturally" will always have some of the washy quality you mentioned. If, however, the hats are to be played tight, it's customary to indicate "Tight hi-hats." In many situations, this is a "Given".... Bossa Novas and Dance Band music. In a lot of the more contemporary Rock and Funk drumming, an open hi-hat is used "Musically" and is indicated by an "O" over the specific count to be played as Open.
There's a lot to be said for Time Honored tradition and value.
