    Default Premier Resto-mod using Rockenwraps

Some folks here have seen some of my resto-mod handiwork. If not, here's a peek at my last project:

Anyway, I just finished my latest project - a Premier Artist Birch kit. This is how it started life:

    • 1966 4-piece Ludwig Black Oyster Pearl
    • 2000 8-piece DW Collector's Grey Swirl
    • 2002 8-piece Pearl Masterworks GB Packer Gold
    • 2008 8-piece Tama B&B Lava Glass Glitter
    • Paiste Signature 12, 14, 14, 16, 16, 17, 18, 18, 20, 20, 22
    • Paiste Formula 602 14, 14, 16, 18, 20

Step 1. Disassemble the drums and give them a good cleaning. Lay out all your parts in a good work space.

    • 1966 4-piece Ludwig Black Oyster Pearl
    • 2000 8-piece DW Collector's Grey Swirl
    • 2002 8-piece Pearl Masterworks GB Packer Gold
    • 2008 8-piece Tama B&B Lava Glass Glitter
    • Paiste Signature 12, 14, 14, 16, 16, 17, 18, 18, 20, 20, 22
    • Paiste Formula 602 14, 14, 16, 18, 20

Step 2. Wrap the drums. I added some Scotch permanent double-sided tape, as the Rockenwraps only use one strip of high-bond tape.

Here you can see the tape strip. Very important to keep things square here!

Step 3. drill/cut all the little holes. I drilled first, then cleaned up all the holes with a knife.

    • 2000 8-piece DW Collector's Grey Swirl

    • Paiste Signature 12, 14, 14, 16, 16, 17, 18, 18, 20, 20, 22

Step 4. Reassemble the drums. I carefully trimmed some of the wrap to make sure it doesn't interfere with the head. I had to drill out the vent holes a little in order to fit 1/2" screw-type grommets.

    • 1966 4-piece Ludwig Black Oyster Pearl
    • 2000 8-piece DW Collector's Grey Swirl
    • 2002 8-piece Pearl Masterworks GB Packer Gold

    • Paiste Signature 12, 14, 14, 16, 16, 17, 18, 18, 20, 20, 22
    • Paiste Formula 602 14, 14, 16, 18, 20

Step 5. Put the heads on and tune up. I like to use the Tama washers - they hold tuning so well. As you can see, I always press on the center of the head and tune out the wrinkles. That's always a great starting point for tuning.

    Yeah, well, uh...

I kinda sorta cut my finger when doing this resto. 6 stitches. Dumbass move while drilling out the name badges. Remember to REALLY clamp those badges down when drilling - the drill bit can bite in and spin the badge right into your flesh...

    Oh, and here's the Carvin.
