Hey, BTG, there's always something new to learn...
Consider the rudiments the ABC's of drumming--that is, you may pick up things by ear (as we all did when we learned to talk), but to read and go beyond what you're doing now, learning the rudiments helps you play more "intelligently."
I had the same experience when I began studying percussion...I heard rhythms and picked them up pretty quickly, but I really didn't start understanding what I was playing until I learned and practiced the rudiments.
Sounds like you're heading in the right direction!
