Great stuff CD. I like the Remo's better Your assistant is adorable too.
Don't get excited.... I'm not rockin' out... LOL!
I had a set of Remo emperors so I decided to give a tom-tom a couple of whacks with each head back to back to hear the difference.
I used my handy-dandy drum dial to ensure both heads were tuned to equal tensions.
The difference is astonishing.

After hearing the difference I think I might need to replace the stock heads on my kid's Superstars. No matter how much I tune them, they sound like the stock's on your Cats. The sound we're looking for is the emperor sound you got.
How do the Emperor's compare to G2's?

Thanks. She's 3-1/2. Virginia is 9 and Kevin jr is almost 5.
I really like the emps too. I wanna do a rockin vid, but the camera mic makes the kit sound laaaaaaame!
The maple snare is so bright and warm...it's just a gorgeous sounding drum. I'm still playing with the toms. They don't quite have that attack like yours do, but the tones are nice.

Cool sound check CD! Once I saw your daughter, though, the drums were secondary. She has a great smile. I see why your heart would melt. You are indeed a lucky dad!

Nice set thanks for showing us the difference.
You can't change the past but you can always alter the future.
Hmmm...I'm going to have to try that myself. I don't notice that I get a "Boing" after ring like I heard on yours. It may be because I use Ambassador coated heads. That's the neat thing about recording what you do...you can study it and learn some things.
BTW, she is a real darling, Kevin!!
There's a lot to be said for Time Honored tradition and value.

Grrr.... I HATE that "Boing". Maybe it's because the vibration between the batter & reso isn't "sympathetic". I fine tuned it after the vid for a cleaner sound.
I had soda at dinner and I was awake later than normal so I changed the 12" to an Emp. For the life of me I couldn't get that puppy to tune. I'd use the drum dial to get started and check by ear, but then each tension rod was different, yet the dial read the skin tension evenly. I cant seem to get rid of that boing on the 12. I wanna do the 14 & 16 tonight.

Cycle dude, The Remo definately sounded better. I have a question the remos seem to have a lower pitch to them, were they tuned to the same approximate tension? You tuning assistant is adorable also.
Gretsch Catalina Birch 6 piece fusion set (10,12,14,16in. Toms, 22 Bass). Sabian 20" HH Classic Ride, 16" Istanbul Agop Dark Crash, & Zildian K 13" Hi-hats.
They were both tuned to equal tension, per a drum dial. The remo is a 2 ply and the stock is a single, so that's probably where the pitch difference is.

Great video and your daughter must take after her Mom lol
sorry couldnt resist Kids are great but they grow up way to fast My princess is in university and away from home Nuff Said
CD, for the emperors, I would start at finger tight and go up a half turn on each lug to narrow the variations in tuning, then try a quarter turn after that until you find a pitch you like and then fine tune.
Be sure your reso head is fully tuned, first. A lot of "boing" can come from that head being out of tune with itself.

Hey CD! Very nice comparison there. Have you tried putting your stock batters on the reso? that should deepen the sound further and help more with that boing.
BTW, little princess is beautiful!
I play, Gretsch Catalina Birch, 7 piece in the vintage sunburst finish.
RIP, Frank. You will not be forgotten. Missing you, mate
Excellent video! Informative, as well. I have a Gretsch Catalina Maple Limited Edition (Dark Cherry) and the stock heads aren't too hot, as shown in your vid. I was going to buy Remo clear pinstripes, but, I think you've convinced me to get the Emperors instead .
