What are "chops"?
Our percussion instructor has taught us a few things to improve chops.

Or 8-6-5: 8 on each hand, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and finishing note.
Try adding single and double accents to the beginning of each hand's set.

This is an oldie but a goodie: 1-2, 1-2, 1-2-3 | 1-2, 1-2, 1-2-3 | 1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2 | 1-2-3-, 1-2, 1-2 :|| This is an exercise in 2 beats + 2 beats + 3 beats and then inverted to 3 beats + 2 beats + 2 beats. Either way, it still comes out to 7 beats per measure but it's the ACCENT on the 1st beat of each group that sets this up. The four measure phrase is played with the RH and then the LH when repeated. It will look like this: R r R r R r r | R r R r R r r | R r r R r R r| R r r R r R r :||

Shoot, we had a thing we'd do in the pit just for the heck of it, I think we called it Chopping out... but it was an exercise where we played certain chords, as eighth notes, and well when we "chopped out" we would go faster and faster until well, everyone dropped out xD
