The clear emps will give your more attach, with added punch. The coated is a warmer head, with slightly less punch and attack. Either one sound terrific, but if you want more attack and punch get the clears.

Clear heads are uninhibited...they let the tone of the drum play out. They are bright sounding and have longer sustain. Coated heads are warmer sounding in that they mute the tone ever so slightly, shortening the sustain. There isn't a whole lot of difference but just enough to make a difference. Jazz players will use coated head almost all of the time because the emphasis is to be more "Musical" with the drumming as opposed to "Volume" playing.
There's a lot to be said for Time Honored tradition and value.

clears are great for recording and coateds are great for practice
I just bought the clear emps for batters and have the stock UT (ambassadors) as resos and the drums sound wicked. Get the clears Chaz. You'll love 'em.

MD,
I hate to sound rude but do you just spin stuff off the top of your head? I thought it was common knowledge amongst the drumming community that many drummers use coateds in the studio for their control and warmer tones. Then for live applications they may use coateds again or go with the clears for more punch and attack.

Kev,
Your loving the emperors, huh? I was having problems tuning my kid's superstars with the stock heads, which are supposedly decent. I got them pretty good, but I'm they are single ply (and who knows how long they were on the kit in the store), so I'm thinking some emperors or g2's will make a huge difference.
Sounds like you would say go for it?

Thanks guys! Well I've decided...in a couple of weekends time I'm going to go get myself some Remo Emperor clear batters and Ambassador clear reso's. I also think I'm going to get an Evans EMAD for my bass. I'm going to wait until I've got all the heads, then take my drums apart, give them a good, thorough clean, put the new heads on and tune up

I just switched to the emad buddy, you will be well pleased me thinks.
Official cowbell hater.
Get ready to be amazed. EMAD exactly sounded like the ones I hear on most recordings I like. I just replaced my stock batter head on my 22" Gretsch Cat Maple kick and it is exactly the sound I was looking for.
Coated looks cooler.

I was using coated emps for quite a while. Recently I decided to try Coated Vintage A's. They sound amazing. To me they are the best of both worlds. They are worth checking out. They are warm sounding, but yet have more attack and sustain than the coated emps in my opinion.

I'm pretty much a clear / coated Emperor / Ambassador guy all around... I've tried Evans G2s and various other 2 ply heads and they never seem to sound as open and full as the Remos. I love the clear Emps on tom batters and clear Ambassadors on the reso side... with a coated Ambassador on the snare. I use either a clear Emperor or Powerstroke 3 on the bass drum depending on application.

I currently use coated Remo Emperor 2ply on all my drums except the base. My snare is same except it is a reverse dot. To me they have a good short punch sound which is what I want. I would try both versions out before committing.
this thread makes me sorta want them again

I had Ambassador coated on top and clear ambassadors on bottom. Which of course aren't as heavy as the emps. They lasted me for ever, like 8 years. (yes, 8 YEARS) I played em till they begged me to stop. I just got evans about six months ago, G2's clear top and bottom on toms and have been blown away. Though after 8 years of the same head, anything might have been an improvement. Remo, Evans, all good. Just stay away from aquarian those things blow.
