like the clear ones?
i would like to have a look at those ludwig of your friend
Don't know if Ludwig still has them. I know there's been a resurgence of clear plexiglass shells. I've seen a few companies that have them. Can't remember which ones.
I used to have a set of Ludwig Vistalites...clear. I felt like John Bohnam !
BOOOOOO!!!
But one of my drum teachers borrowed it...and never returned it.Originally Posted by Boo

LOL!!! I like the clear ones, but like Drummer said, there are a number of companies making them now, I would just like to hear them live.

There not ment to sound too flash... unless that was the guitars..... I saw a clip of travis barker playing one. Sounded alright... They definatly are a good stage kit i would say. Really interesting.

I just don't think they would sound that great. Not to mention it doesn't seem like the manufacturer has put any effort into making the kit.

"100% Pure Maple, and you"
"Plexiglass."
"So, plastic then?"

vialites and visalite style drums have ALOT of resonance and overtone. ALOT! So it's a taste kind of thing. I like my drums to ring and all but for me it sounds like visalites are in an echo chamber.
lol so not that great :P There must be a way of controlling it better by warping the layers and thickness of the plexi. Im positive there would be a way of making them sound good. It would just be hard

about the companies that have them:
TAMA
Ludwig
i think that's it
Ostinato is the way to go!
Plexiglass kits don't sound good? Mike Pornoy, who can play any kit he wants, plays on a Tama plexiglass kit. I saw him a couple of months back playing with G3. He sounded incredible. Also, to me the biggest thing that sets Bonham apart from the rest of the crowd is his sound. He has a signature tone, like Santana does on the guitar. He's the only drummer in the world who has a signature tone and he got it with a plexiglass kit. How many million albums have these two artists sold?

All I said is I don't like em. I didn't say they didn't sound good. Stop putting words in my mouth.
Uuummm...didn't know that I was. There was some question as to the sound quality of these kits and I simply pointed out that two of the worlds greatest drummers have played them and they sound awesome (IMO). I humbly appologise for inadvertently putting words in your mouth.Originally Posted by el presidente
As to the ring thing (hey, that rymes!), I'm no expert but it's my impression that some of the real high end kits have this characteristic. I know the DW's ring like crazy.
Oh, btw- those plexigalss kits look amazing under stage lights.

hellz yeah! portnoys acrylic mirage kit looked and sounded killer on the g3 tour.
however i wouldnt really say bonhams sig sound came from his acrylic drums as he only played those live, in the studio he always used classic maples.
Yeah, I think his micing and the room had a lot to do with the sound on those recordings too. Still, Portnoy's kit sounded pretty freak'n good to me too.

there is a band in melbourne called "black guns" and the drummer has his own line of drums which are plexi glass( cant remember the brand name ) . I have seen these guys a few times and the drums sound really good. I was amazed at the sound but personally for me, wood all the way!

It seems as though they'd be less resistant to heat and cold than wood drums. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Plexiglass is a lot more forgiving to temperature changes than wood. Humidity does not effect them either. I think they would be great for touring because the can take more of a beating than a wood kit. They might get some scratches, but you would'nt have to worry about dings and they don't crack as easily.

Maple, in particular, is pretty volatile (i.e. expands and contracts with fluctuations in moisture). Mahogany is even more volatile.Originally Posted by hellsbells58

Hm i forget the stories we got at tafe of people traveling to QLD or asia etc where its moist and ruined their guitars. Best to hire things when you get there if your touring. There are places that do it so if people do tour. Keep that in mind.
