what does a woofer do ?

this may seem like a stupid question, but what is the purpose of a bass drum woofer. i've seen them mostly on drum workshop kits. my guess is that it provides more bottom end but did'nt know if there was more to it.

"Created to act as a sub-woofer for the drumset, this specialty drum is designed to utilize the sympathetic frequencies from the bass drum to further enhance the roundness and low-end punch most drummers seek. The 8”-deep drum comes in 18” to 28” diameters and does not include a reinforcement hoop. A May-ATM25BD is factory installed (internal miking for the bass drum is also recommended). TB12 tom brackets can also be factory installed on the bass drum and woofer for sturdy set-up. For temporary use, a cradle is also available."

Indeed Itchie they do, but there is quite a difference in what they are doing. The DW is a skinny kick drum, vibrating to produce tone that has a mic built into it. The Yamaha subkick is basically a 6.5" speaker turned into a microphone. The heads are mesh and the shell is mahogany. Very cool stuff. If you search the net, there are plans for one of those.
I wonder what having both would be like!

thanks guys. i was'nt sure if i would like one or not. i may look at the yamaha sub kick but i've got a 26 x 20 acrylic kick drum and i doubt i would need it. as for the dw woofer, i did'nt know it had the mics built in it until you all answered that for me. i went back to the dw site and researched it a little more and i like how it looks but just don't think i need one. i've seen where people have made the sub kick mics out of coffee cans and things like that, i may give that i shot.
