Thanks - yes - I didn't think there would be a problem with the Custom USA Permatones - but you never know - so I was just checking in on that one.

Your kit looks really nice with the stands and cymbals - a very "classic look" if I may say. Like your set up there Les - it must be tons of fun to play.

I am going to start messing around with tunings and head selection.

NO! Remo Coated Emperors or Coated Ambassadors should be the only heads that touch those drums!

    *Mr. Tama,
I am also toying with the idea of Emporer smooth whites.

that was an exaggeration. They sounded awful on my Tama Swingstars. But, trust me. Smooth Whites will sound great! that or EC2s!

I have had experience with the Ec2 and Emporer varieties and I will say that The EC2s are the worst. IMO. Smooth whites are responsive and powerful sounding along with being durable.

My friend has a similar looking Pearl masters kit. It's also the African Mahogany shells with the clear lacquer. Nice sounding kit. Kinda similar to birch.

Give the Aquarian's a try. I'd look into the Studio x's. I always get the best sound with the least effort with Aquarian's.

Smooth white Emperor's wouldn't be a bad choice either though. Coated ambassadors are on the bottom of my list for tom heads. Love them on snares though.

I completely agree about the head (s) comments.
I love the sound of aquarian studio Xs.I just have some durability issues with 'em. As far as A.M sounding like birch..hmmm...?
I find my kit to have alot of the same tonal qualities as Maple in the flatter response of the high and mid frequencies, but huge bottom end.
The best sounding kit I think I have ever heard!?!?

Yeah, I played that Pearl kit the day he got it and it wasn't exactly tuned the best at that point.

I'll agree with the studio x's and that's why I switched to the Performance II's on my dw's. I tune my toms pretty low and the studio-x's didn't last very long, especially on the floors. They sounded great though. The performance II's have the durability and sound good. You have a 4pc so it's not like you need to drop $100 on heads (love the 4pc config btw) so you can afford to experiment a little.

    Thanks!

They practically gave that Pearl masters mahogany kit away. He got four toms, the kick, two Pearl tom stands, AND Humes & Burg hard shell padded cases for ALL the drums for $1050 with tax. The cases and the stands alone probably cost that much new. It was like getting a free Pearl Masters drum set.

Actually., my kit was being offered on craigslist for months with no takers.
One day while walking through musicgoround in Greenfield my wife spotted the kit..I knew those drums..they are pretty rare..only 60 of these African Mahogany Renowns in the 24,13,16 config in the world..
To make a long story short..through some wheeling and dealing and a weak economy..They are mine!!
