Default I Need Help with my Head (s).

    Hey all,
Long time reader, first time poster.

I have been blessed with a DW set for the past 10 years or so. I have very old Evans G2 coated as the batter heads, and Evan clear (I think single ply) heads on the resonance side.

In the past I have used (on different drumsets) Remo pinstripe, Remo oil filled, even Remo Ebony. I need some serious help in my tuning abilities (thats another topic I guess) but I want a sound with a little pop, but nice warm resonance. I play mostly Jam Band style (Dave, Gov't Mule) and also in the revival church setting (anything goes).

I would really appreciate any help on choosing some new aggression acceptors.

Welcome to DC, Bat! I'd recommend clear Remo emperors as batters and clear Remo ambassadors as resos. That is the head combo I use and I am really quite happy with them.

The clear emps have gobs of attack, and a beautiful resonance without ringy overtones. They have a good meaty tone as well. awesome sound IMHO.

    Welcome to Drum Chat Bat!

I was wondering, since you want a warm sound, are your shells maple, or birch? If they are maple, I would agree with Evans G2. The drums would still be open, but warm. If they're birch, you might want Remo Pinstripes just to control any of those higher pitched overtones.

    Just my thoughts.

To me this sounds like a call for coated heads. You say you want a warm resonance. Well coated heads will give you just that. I will recommend Coated Emperors or Coated Ambassadors.

But, Clear Emperors are AMAZING heads, so give those a shot as well!
Tama Starclassic Birch in Emerald Sea Fade 24x18, 13x10, 18x16
Mapex Black Panther Phosphor Bronze 5.5x14
Remo Coated Emperors (or Evans Clear EC2s) over Remo Coated Ambassadors
Remo Coated Ambassador Over Hazy Diplomat Snare Side
Dream Contact 14" Hi-Hats, Zildjian Avedis 21" Sweet Ride, Zildjian A Custom 18" Projection Crash, Wuhan 18" China

Heads with a little Pop and warmth...Remo coated Ambassadors with clear Diplomat reso. Will not take a lot of physicallity to play and still get a musical tone. Great tuning range for all styles of music. If you want a heavier head for harder playing, Remo Emperor with Ambassador clear reso. If you prefer the Evans, use G1 (Ambassador) or G2 (Emperor). Evans also has a nice reso head.

Thanks for all the help, and I guess it good to hear some solid advice.

I was a bit curious if anyone had experience with Aquirian Heads or any other brands than Remo. Thanks

    Welcome to DrumChat, bat.

I tried Aquarian heads and found they don't fit well on wrapped toms...TAMA to be specific.

I totally use their SK series for the kick drums, tho.

I like Evans and Remo for everything else.
