I actually had to use the much longer conga lugs to start my hembra (large bongo head) because there was no way on this Earth that skin was going to go on! It worked pretty slick with the longer lugs - I just cranked them until I got a smidgin (a little) shorter than the bongo lugs so I could get a nut started. I waited for a few minutes for the head to settle a bit and then switched the lugs out one by one.
I've heard good things about Mule skin (the mules would disagree though). Keep in touch after you get the head on and settled in with it.
Ranger42.
I got carried away here......sorry about hijacking your Aspire Post with my "tucking" stuff here.
I'll just add......I also think the LP Aspire line are good drums. I've slapped a few around in the drum stores and they sounded nice - and they look beautiful - some really nice finishes.
Cheers,
Kona

I may be a little late on this one, ranger42, but it may be a matter of semantics. The Aspire line replaced the former Cosmic Percussion line of congas and bongos about the turn of the (21st) century, and technically they are the same product. I learned this the hard way when I had to find a replacement head for my CP conga I purchased in 1987--and after much frustration, finally learned I should have asked for an Aspire head!
The Matadors were an intemediate range between the CP and LP range, and as such, were of somewhat higher quality than the CPs. But the Aspires are darn good drums for their money--you have nothing to be ashamed of!
When I take drum lessons (yes, I still take lessons!) I play the drum shop's Aspires and they sound as great as any other conga I've played....keep in mind it's not necessarily the drum, but the guy or gal who's playin' it...
keep the beat goin' ... Don't keep it to yourself!

bongobro,
never too late to encourage a beginner.
i thank you for your support.
and don't even the pros still take an occasional lesson..?
i know my teacher still mentors a couple of pros.
so no shame there.
i sincerely apologize if this is an unwanted thread hijack or revival, but i do wish to know how do the aspire cowbells/triangles/bongos/timbales rate? i see them in sizes i am interested in but do not know if they are good as im more of a drumset guy but i want to add them on at a later date

Hey Russ, gotta second what Leedy2 said, the Matador line is quite a step up in quality and sound for not much more money. Especially if you go used, matador is an excellent bang for the buck and worthy of gigging with. I see used matador bongos for $50, congas for 150-300 for the set, timbales for 100-150 all the time. You would pay more for new Aspires and the difference would be night and day.
so avoid aspires at all costs? what about the cowbells and triangles?

I'm not saying avoid them, they are certainly nice starter instruments, but for the price the Matadors are definitely the better buy. I would stay away from the bells though, the real deal is so much better, it would be like sheet cymbals compared to cast, and cowbells are relatively cheap so why skimp?
i cant find better ones in 4,6,and 8" sizes. i heard some aspire congas and timbales, so far liking the line! very cool sounds and something i could actually afford. are there any other cowbell/triangle/block series' i should look out for? im trying to find some which would have a low middle and high note to them. i had thought the aspire's were what i was looking for

As far as LP goes for high pitch i'd recomend the black beauty, medium either a timbale bell or salsa bell, and for low the bongo bell or the prestige. I've been thoroughly impressed with the Pearl bells lately and I believe they have several sizes as well.
prestige sounds expensive?

I've got a Matador bell and an Aspire bell, the Matador bell sounds great just the way it is but no matter how much tape I put on the Aspire bell it still sounds like I'm banging on a frying pan!

its not a cheap line ill give it that much, most the conga sets i saw were 570 and the timbales over 300.
