Those bearing edges are a joke, right ? !

I'd also like to tell the concave snare bed inventer what I think of him. Wish they would of offered me the option when I ordered my custom starclassic maple snare that took way too long to get, would of said heck no ! Please exuse my language.

That first pic looks like you chained it to the back of a truck and drug it on some asphalt for a while.

I saw the thread title and thought, I'd never neuter my snare. I'm sure it made an amazing difference. And I agree, I've never seen a bearing edge so gnarled in my life. Buy your dog a chew toy and keep him away from your drums. I mean, I wish you had a soundfile so I could hear how bad it sounded.

Not to appear to be stupid but how do Rim Shots cause that kind of damage? I mean, you do have a metal hoop of some kind.

LOL I was wondering the same thing Frank! Itchie, you must put a real whuppin' on the rim when you do a rimshot. If your bearing edge looked like that, I can't even imagine what your rim looked like! You have got to tell us how it happened.

Another reason why I don't play rim shots.
A good drummer will sound good on anything(even stock drum heads). A bad drummer will sound bad on anything.

I seldom play them. As a student in fifth grade, I took private lessons by the head of a high school drummline. He used Stick Control by Stone. My junior high drum instructor was a student of Stone. Both instructors taught me that proper technique for snare drum is to hit it in the center of the head at all times, allowing the head to vibrate fully, therefore bringing out the true sound of the drum, also the place where the snare wires are most responsive. All levels of volume can be achieved by playing with proper technique and control. Striking the rim and the center of the head is called a gawk(proper terminology-I think i spelled it right) which is reserved for deafeningly loud accents. Striking the rim left to right with the stick laying flat on the drum is a rim shot(cross stick in kit terminology).
