Default fast songs make my muscle burn? =[

i dont mean really fast as in death metal or anything, but just songs where my right hand hits hi-hat or ride (my pad, for now) constantly at about 150bpm (1/8s) and after a while the upper part of my arm starts to burn :(
i know its not supposed to happen so does it mean i hold the stick wrong or something like that?

no it's not that, i had the same problem when i was starting out. what your problem probably is, is that your either not stretching or loosening up your muscles before drumming. also, it could be that your not used to the speed.
just thought i'd try and help.
Ostinato is the way to go!

You need to warm up or you can & will hurt yourself. Never start of fast with out warming up

Larry is right. I always start with slow beats, and some rudiments before i attempt anything fast

to be honest i think i felt it the first time yesterday, as i spent quite a while "drumming" on my pillow, and that feels a little like running on quicksand compared to drumming on the pad, takes much more effort
anyway i will take time to warm up from now on, thanks for the comments

Yeah... I have the same problem...

One of my friend/s teachers told him to move his arm up and down like a chicken to increase blood flow or something like that.

I find warming up properly helps me a great deal...

In my opinion you should practice at a slower tempo, maybe with a metronome.., and play with consistency, not speed. You should do this for a decent amount of time so your drummin muscles will get stronger and will they build stamina. Each time you practice, pick up the tempo just by a little. In the long run you will be able to play faster beats without your muscles burning up and you will also have some great consistency too.

my problem (like everyone's probably) with playing to a metronome is that i get bored in like 2-3 minutes and then i start playing along to songs on my pad. i mostly play katatonia but i doubt anyone here knows them. its probably the easiest band i have in my whole list as the rest is pretty much like 900 tracks of death metal only. oh i can also play along to some dark tranquillity

heres examples for songs i played along to like 20 times each (on my pad ofcourse, which sucks pretty much but heh)

all pretty simple and no really hard parts

i just love these songs and its much more interesting than metronome. i guess (hope) it builds some consistency too

What he said... If you just try to play fast not only will you treat your body badly, you will limit your learning and miss out on some cool rhythms that you will never happen across just by trying to blast away, IMHO.

Try to challenge yourself with some death-ish metal with different flavors to open up your horizons. I would suggest Opeth, Origin, Scale The Summit, maybe even Mastodon which is much more like jazz or fusion drumming.
