    Default Sledgehammer or Black Beauty?

Narrowed the choice down to two (although, if I can get away with it I might just get both):

Mapex Sledgehammer 14x6.5 or Luddy Black Beauty 14x6.5?

Input from any current owners appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know anything about the Sledgehammer...but I heard a video of the BB and it was to die for. I want one. I assume the Sledge is brass as well?

Black Beauty, Super Sensitive if you can swing it.

I've been playing with Black Beauties (Super Sensitives) and Supras for all of my adult life. Both can handle any musical situation.

The 1's from the 70's are probably the best. They are expensive, but they are worth every penny.

Seems like the BB is getting the most support. I was also leaning that way. Heard lot's of good comments about those and there was one at Dale's that sounded amazing.

Next question is smooth or hammered? I guess hammered would take some of the ring or overtones out?

The Black Beauty is a time-tested, classic drum that just works for almost any genre. I do not own one but at some point I will. For me there would be no question.
Your = possessive - your stuff, your dog, your car, etc
    You're = you are - a contraction.

    Learn it. Love it.

This. Although I'm not currently looking, if I get another snare it would make the most sense for me to get a metal shell since I have two maple ones (the Ayottes).

I had long wanted an Ayotte-Keplinger, but getting another snare from a company with a questionable future that uses unique parts probably isn't the most savvy move I could make. A RAYA would make more sense, as Ray seems to just use tube lugs now, but I can't kick the tires on it in person.

I'm torn between a Noble & Cooley Alloy Classic and Ludwig Black Beauty myself, and given the wider availability of ones in stock to try and more traditional parts, the edge goes to the Ludwig for me at the moment- the hammered 14"x6.5" specifically.

The BB also hold their value from what I've read here and on other forums. They're an American classic up there with the Strat, Les Paul, Coca-Cola, and Shelby Cobra.

With those new Keystones, a Black Beauty would just be killer!
A simple, elegant design is good engineering.

You have to watch e-bay like a hawk. There is always 1 that pops up for a great price.

The 1 I use is about 30 years old. The 1 I put away, is in the area of 40 years old.

IMO, the 1's from the 60's, 70's and 80's, sound better than the new 1's.

Yep, been keeping an eye on ebay. Everything on there seems to be brand new. Seen one with imperial lugs for $599. Tube lugs best so far is $649. I'm leaning towards 6.5x14 hammered with tube lugs.

Should the postman happen to bring two by accident, I would be happy to pass along my address.
