Question My Evans Tom Batter Heads

I put Evans tom batters on a 10, 12 & 14 tom a week and a half ago. The packaging for these heads all state G2 (these are clear heads). A few days later I notice the printing on the heads themselves are different. The 10 & 14 state "genera g2" and the 12 states "G2".

I also noticed the 10 & 14 have almost no visible oil between the two plys and the 12 has visible oil between the plys covering the whole head.

Are the ones labeled genera g2 a phased out designation, but the same head or did I buy completely different heads?

They're the same head. Evans just started labeling them differently. And there's no oil in G2's, old or new.

Thank you. I guess it just looks like oil.

I play at a friends house sometimes and he has clear emperors that look like that sometimes. It's mostly gone away since he got them though. I don't think it's oil I think it's just something about the way the two plies line up and the light.

It does look like moisture though. When you drag your finger across the head, does it move like you would expect a liquid to?

    Exactly like that, yes.

I would imagine that a small amount of condensation was captured during the manufacturing process. I wouldn't be surprised to see it eventually disappear. It should be a very small amount that hopefully wont affect the sound.

Just about all two ply heads look like that. Trust me it is not oil. John

It's not oil, it's just the way the light passes through the two plys. If you hold it at different angles you'll get the rainbow effect in different spots. Pressing on the head distorts the shape and therefore distorts the "rainbow". The only thing you're pushing around is light, not oil.

From the Evans website: The rainbows that you see inside our 2-ply heads are not caused by oil. The rainbows are actually interference patterns created by the intersection of the light waves passing between the 2 plies of film. Don't mistake this rainbow effect for the old Evans trademark Hydraulic heads, which are widely popular for studio work and a classic funk-style sound. Hydraulics are two ply heads that do have a thin layer of oil between the plies. This oil is clearly visible as small bubbles in between the plies!

Thank you for all the great information. So just so I'm clear, the G2s have no oil in between the two layers.

Unless the heads specifically say Hydraulic, the two-ply heads are empty.

Some would say that trait applies to most drummers as well...
