    Default Mandatory Listening for drummers?

I've been trying to make a point to listen to some influential drummers. It's nice revisting some music from my youth. I've never listened to many other styles besides rock. So I'm pretty clueless when it comes to other styles like jazz. So I'm curious what other CD's I should get that should be considered mandatory listening for a drummer.

    Lately I've been listening to
    Buddy Rich
    Led Zeppelin
    The Who
    Rush

    Aja - Steely Dan

Not only do the album credits read like a "Who's Who" of great musicians, but the drumming is epic.

    Bernard Purdie
    Steve Gadd
    Ed Greene
    Paul Humphrey
    Jim Keltner
    Rick Marotta

The album only has 7 cuts, but each one is a classic. Don't expect shred-like hemmorages of notes...but listen to how each drummer plays to the song.

I just saw Keith Carlock live last week in Nashville. That guy was SICK! I'm definitely putting him on my list.

You nailed the mandatory list in the first post.

    Rich
    Bonham
    Peart

That are hundreds of other great drummers, but I'd only consider the three above mandatory for ANY drummer to be familiar with.

I'll get bashed for saying it but Buddy Rich doesnt really do anything for me, i mean he's good but just not my thing i guess. Now Purdie on the other hand, I could listen to him groove all day long.

anyway, back to the op question.
    lets see, albums.
Yes - Bill Bruford / Alan White
The Meters - Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste
    Frank Zappa - Vinnie Colaiuta
    Toto - Porcaro/Simon Phillips

    Dream Theater - Portnoy
The Dave Brubeck Quartet -Joe Morello
    Sting - Omar Hakim
Dave Matthews Band - Carter Beauford
    The Police - Stewart copeland
    Miles Davis Quintet- Tony Williams

I'd recommend Dave Lombardo, because he mixes in other drumming styles (especially jazz) with his fast thrash metal playing. Check out Slayer's last two albums if you want to hear a good variety of metal.

A must listen to for Jazz drumming would be Dave Brubeck's "Time Out" album featuring Joe Morello on drums. Many unusual time signatures including 5/4 in the famous "Take Five" cut, and it also includes many jazz waltzes, some 9/8, etc. Challenging just to listen to and try to figure what the drummer is doing.
Gretsch Catalina Birch 6 piece fusion set (10,12,14,16in. Toms, 22 Bass). Sabian 20" HH Classic Ride, 16" Istanbul Agop Dark Crash, & Zildian K 13" Hi-hats.

+1 on these. Copeland is just awesome. As for Coltrane, there's just so much stuff to listen to, and it's all just amazing music (not just drums).
