I have a used Meinl hand hammered cowbell on the way from Ebay. I was wondering what uses for cowbell and cowbell grooves you might suggest. Minus the over used and joked about classic rock quarter notes groove?

Lisa, the Mozambique rhythm is also a popular one a lot of guys used. Steve Gadd brought it to the forefront back in the 80's with Paul Simon's, "Late in the Evening".

Here he is featuring it on drumset (including cowbell) in a clinic in LA a few years back:

Thanks to all of you. I really appreciate the input. I must admit I have the Groove Essentials DVD but never bothered with the Mozambique. Maybe I should consider taking the time with it. Not sure I have the independent coordination to pull it off.

I love the clave stuff and learned it a while back but I usually play that part using cross sticks. If you play it on cowbell instead then do you do anything with the snare or just keep time on the hats?

I really want to incorporate the bell in some funk grooves like Kay-gee mentioned and hopefully find a place to work it in at church. I really love the Latin beats but don't have an outlet to use them.

With funk grooves, leave a space for the snare drum. You can take any kind of syncopated right hand thing and leave a space at the 2 and 4, then make a cowbell groove out of it.

This may sound weird but check out Procol Harum's "Whiskey Train" and "Poor Mohammed"-B.J.Wilson on drums. Great use of the cowbell.

Keysanddrums, great point. I am going to play with this concept and have fun with it.

SLinglander, I will certainly check out these songs. Much appreciated.

Funky stickings I was doing some of that earlier today on a cowbell and it sounded pretty sweet.

Okay, I got the sticking pattern on the Mozambique down fairly well. A couple utube tutorials didn't hurt.

Now, where does the kick drum go, typically?

I listened to the song and I love the cowbell groove in the chorus. Now can I figure out what the heck he is playing.
